Bad news - Cain Velasquez (13-1) will no longer fight Fabricio Werdum (18-5-1) in defense of his UFC world heavyweight championship next month in Mexico City. Good news - We're still getting an intriguing world title bout, albeit an interim one, in exchange.
Fabricio Werdum will take on Mark Hunt (10-8-1) for the newly created UFC heavyweight interim title Nov. 15 at UFC 180 in the main event of the promotion's first ever show in Mexico. The fight will not only pit two of the division's hottest contenders against one another, it's also a match up that has so many x-factors that we're racking our brains to pick a winner.
Here's our first crack at breaking down a few key categories of Werdum vs. Hunt. Read on, and let us know how you see things playing out in the comments section!
Standing striking:
Few fighters in MMA can boast the kickboxing credentials that Mark Hunt has. And, absolutely no one has as many walk-off knockout wins as Hunt.
The New Zealander has dynamite in his fists and granite in his chin, both of which make give him an advantage in stand-up striking against most opponents. Werdum would appear to be no exception.
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu submission expert should definitely look to get Hunt on his back, to have his best chance at winning on Nov. 15. However, when it comes to stand up striking, Werdum is greatly improved and a live dog.
In 2011, Werdum arguably out-struck K-1 Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem before losing a razor-close, and admittedly mostly slow-paced decision. In his very next fight, Werdum lit up Roy Nelson with a Muay Thai clinic.
Is Werdum good enough to out-strike Hunt? Maybe not in terms of straight skill-set, but perhaps he's got enough to give Hunt something to think of, wear him down a bit and take advantage of Hunt's lack of preparation for this short-notice fight.
Still, Werdum would be wise to find a way to get Hunt on the ground and not play around on the feet, too long. On that note...
Wrestling:
In switching opponents from Velasquez to Hunt, Werdum is also switching from someone who he had little hope of taking down, to a rival he likely has a wrestling advantage over. Werdum has to be careful, however, not to telegraph take down attempts, and instead remain gutsy and patient enough to stand and strike until he can time a smart and efficient take down attempt.
Hunt may not be an NCAA wrestling All-American, but he's gotten much better at using his substantial size and good timing to avoid take down shots, and muscle out of clinch attempts. The biggest threat to Hunt getting taken down will likely be when he over commits to his power shots (like his left hook), and leaves himself off balance and completely open to shot attempts.
Werdum will have to be patient, stay safe on his feet, give Hunt something to think about with his own strikes and use timing to take Hunt down if the slugger over commits to one of those wide punches. Hunt may want to consider being very patient himself, and using mostly straight punches, to mitigate risk of getting taken down.
Hunt may not win the battle of who can stay tight and patient for the following reason, however...
Conditioning:
Listen, despite his appearances, Hunt has proven that he can go five rounds, hard, before. Werdum has not.
Unfortunately for the K-1 champ, Hunt only has a couple weeks to get conditioned for his fight against Werdum - a pretty impossible task in any case. Add on to that the fact that Hunt is still likely worn out from his recent training camp, drastic weight cut and fight, and that Hunt has admitted to weighing over 300 pounds this week, and the smart money is on Hunt huffing and puffing a great deal if the fight reaches the later rounds.
Werdum faces a lot of unknowns in his new opponent, but we can be almost certain he'll be the better conditioned athlete come fight night...unless he eats one too many Hunt bombs early on, that is.
Ground:
Sure, Werdum is much better, here and we've already recommended he make sure to get Hunt to the mat. If he gets on top, it is bound to be a rough night for Hunt.
Unlike most other fighters, Werdum likely has the sharpness to pounce on a limb and take it home with him if Hunt muscles up in his typically sloppy manner. That is to say, if you're a beast like Hunt and find yourself mounted, you can grab hold, bridge out, or turn and stand with your arms straight out, against most fighters without getting arm barred.
Against Werdum, that's not a great idea. Even though Werdum has an amazing submission game, he would still be smart to look to solidify top position if he gets the take down, and use strikes to wear down and take out Hunt.
Most submissions are simply not high-percentage in a real fight - they are useful last resorts. Hunt has an amazing chin but he can't last as long taking shots on the ground (with the mat there to bounce his dome around) as it can on the feet.
Even if Hunt ends up on top, on the ground, he?ll be in trouble. Heck, Werdum has shown himself dangerous off his back even after getting rocked and dropped (see his win over Fedor Emelianenko).
We don't know who will win the main event at UFC 180 - that's why they fight the fights. We do know that we sure are looking forward to it.
Either guy could win, and in shocking fashion. Who are you picking, and why?

The UFC announced Wednesday the makings of a monster card on Fox for January, with the main event pitting Alexander Gustafsson against Anthony Johnson withthe winner earning the next shot at the UFC light heavyweight title.
The bout will be on Jan. 24 in Stockholm, Sweden, at Tele2 Arena in Sweden, a dome which can hold in excess of 30,000 fans for soccer and likely more for mixed martial arts. It willl be shown live nationally in the U.S. on Fox.
The No. 1-ranked Gustafsson was supposed to rematchchampion Jon Jones for the belt in the main event of UFC 178 in Las Vegas on Sept. 27, but had to pull out because of a knee injury. He'll know fight the No. 3-ranked Johnson for the right to meet the winner of the Jan. 3 championship bout between Jones and No. 2 Daniel Cormier that is behind held in Las Vegas.
"This is going to be an epic event,? Gustafsson said in a statement released by the UFC. ?I want more than 30,000 fans to come and witness me win on Jan. 24. Then I?m going to go and get the title. My journey back to the top starts now."
Johnson, who was recently reinstated by the UFC after allegations of domestic violence against him could not be proven, said he is eager to challenge Gustafsson in Gustafsson's home country.
Johnson is coming off a decisive victory over Phil Davis in the co-main event of UFC 172 and a first-round knockout of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC on Fox in San Jose on July 26.
"This fight might be on his home turf, but I?m ready to go over to Sweden and prove that I?m the next in the line for the UFC light heavyweight title,? Johnson said in a statement. ?I?m not intimidated by fighting in front of Alex?s hometown fans. I?m going to go in there and look for the knockout like I do in all of my fights. I can?t wait for this."
The co-main event features Dan Henderson's return to middleweight against Gegard Mousasi. Matt Brown will meet former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine on the main card.

Retired UFC star Chael Sonnen continues to make headlines with his new podcast, You're Welcome. First, he got Georges St. Pierre to open up about UFO encounters, and then The American Gangster claimed that he was offered millions of dollars by pro-wrestling outfit WWE to leave the UFC and become a wrassler.
"Here's the nuts and bolts of it," Sonnen began.
"I was offered $5 million [WWE head] Vince McMahon...Now, I was still under contract with the UFC and I never took this to Dana. I handled it on my own. I told them 'No' and that was the end of that. I never told Dana White this story, but here's why I didn't tell him. I knew if I called Dana and said, 'I've got a $5 million offer from Vince McMahon,' Dana would have matched it." (listen to the full podcast episode below)
Sonnen explained that the reason he didn't go back to UFC president Dana White and try to negotiate a more lucrative deal for himself inside the UFC based on the WWE offer, is because he didn't want to get on White's bad side and be seen as disloyal. "Dana would have come close and now all of a sudden I'm not a loyal employee," Sonnen explained.
"I'm not loyal to the UFC. I'm shopping them and I'm being loyal to myself. That's business. That's how that works and I don't think anyone would have had hard feelings but I didn't see myself that way."
Sonnen became more known for his mic skills than his top-notch fighting ones. Do you think he could have found success in the WWE as a promo-cutting personality?

LAS VEGAS -- Anthony Pettis insisted that his 15-month layoff since his last bout would have no impact upon him. And after submitting No. 1 contender Gilbert Melendez less than two minutes into the second round of their lightweight title fight at UFC 181 at Mandalay Bay, it was hard to argue.
Melendez, the former Strikeforcechampion and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, shot in on Pettis in the decisive sequence. Pettis appeared ready and got Melendez in a guillotine. He quickly forced Melendez to tap, the first time in a 12-year career Melendez was finished.
Asked what message he wanted to send to other lightweight contenders, Pettis cut to the chase.
"I just showed the message right there," Pettis said. "The No. 1 guy in the world [and I finished him in] two rounds."
It was a good first round and Melendez had more than his share of moments. He took Pettis down and also landed a series of good punches.
But the harder, more impactful strikes were coming from Pettis.
"He was fast, striking tight in the pocket," Melendez said. "I was trying to load up on that punch and he popped in that jab."
Pettis hurt Melendez several times, once with a right hand and another time with a kick. He seemed unsettled at first when Melendez came after him, but that was part of Melendez's strategy.
Pettis is a striker, but Melendez wanted to make him trade.
"I wanted to stay in his face and bang it out, and try to test his chin as much as possible," Melendez said. "He's good and quick."
Pettis, 27, has made a phenomenal rise. He won the title last year in his hometown of Milwaukee, finishing Benson Henderson in the first round with an arm bar.
On Saturday, he was just as impressive in beating a guy no one else could really handle. Melendez was coming off a dynamic win over Diego Sanchez that some thought was the 2013 Fight of the Year.
But Pettis showed he's unquestionably the best at 155 pounds.
"GIl is tough, and he was throwing heat," Pettis said. "I give big ups to Gilbert. I've been watching him a long time. When I was a kid, I was watching him. But now I'm here."
And it's going to take one exceptional fighter to get past him.

The UFC announced Saturday in a brief statement that it has fined light heavyweightchampion Jon Jones $25,000 for his failed out-of-competition drug test on Dec. 4. The promotion also announced it had been assured by the Nevada Athletic Commission that Jones had passed all of his post-fight drug tests.
Jones defeated Daniel Cormier on Jan. 3 in the main event of UFC 182 at the MGM Grand Garden to retain hischampionship.
Less than 72 hours after the fight, Jones released a statement to Yahoo Sports in which he announced his failed test and that he'd enter a drug treatment facility in New Mexico. However, his mother, Camille, told a Binghamton, N.Y., television station that he stayed only one day in the rehabilitation center.
UFC president Dana White said there is more to that but he didn't want to speak for Jones. He said Jones was going to speak publicly in the near future and would explain his brief stay at the treatment center.
The news of his positive test for cocaine on Dec. 4 created a firestorm of controversy. Because it was an out-of-competition test, neither the UFC nor the Nevada commission could prevent him from fighting. Nevada uses the World Anti-Doping Agency's prohibited list and cocaine is prevented only in-competition, which is regarded as 12 hours prior tothe event until the event's completion.
Jones passed random performance-enhancing drug tests given to him on Dec. 4 and Dec. 18, as well as his standard post-fight drug test that also included a screen for drugs of abuse.
"The UFC announced today that it has fined light heavyweight champion Jon Jones $25,000 for violating the organization?s Athlete Code of Conduct policy. Jones tested positive for cocaine during an out-of-competition drug test conducted by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Dec. 4, 2014. The $25,000 will be donated to a substance abuse prevention program.
The UFC came to this decision after reviewing the facts surrounding the issue, and after receiving confirmation from the Nevada Athletic Commission that Jones passed all required drug tests following his bout at UFC 182 on Jan. 3."
The Jones-Cormier bout was named Fight of the Night and each man was awarded a $50,000 bonus. It is believed Jones was able to keep that bonus, though not confirmed by UFC officials.

After the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Daniel Cormier was living in Stillwater, Okla., trying to determine what would be next in his life. He was selling advertising for a public access television station while mulling his future.
He began to host a wrestling coach's show on the channel, the first step in a not-so-long journey that led to Monday's announcement by Fox Sports that Cormier has been appointed the permanent co-host of UFC Tonight with host Kenny Florian.
Cormier steps in to replace Chael Sonnen, who was fired after failing two random drug tests and then lying about it.
It's a major step forward in his career, and one he hardly could have foreseen not that long ago.
"It's crazy to think what's happened," he said. "When you think of a TV station in a town of 50,000 people like Stillwater, I'm talking about public access TV. I was selling ad space and the guy came up to me and said, 'You know, Daniel, you actually do a pretty good job talking to people. Would you want to host a coach's show?' I said, 'I'll try it,' and I made a set. I took a square piece of cardboard ? not actually cardboard, but like a shadow box ? and we painted it the color of an international wrestling mat. We painted one the colors of Oklahoma State, one the colors of OU and another of Stillwater High School.
"We sat in front of a desk, and every week, the college coaches and the high school coaches would come in and I would sit and talk to them and interview them. We had a one-hour show where we'd break down the matches from the week before and then talk to the coaches. It was called 'On the Mat with Daniel Cormier and Ethan Kyle.' It was one camera on a tripod pointed at me and Ethan. That was my TV experience prior to Fox."
Cormier began working as a part-time analyst for Fox at UFC 155 on Dec. 29, 2012. He's done studio work, pre-fight, post-fight and weigh-in shows for Fox since.
He's excelled, along with Brian Stann and Dominick Cruz in particular, and deservedly got the nod to replace Sonnen as Florian's sidekick.
"We?re thrilled to have Daniel join the UFC Tonight team on a permanent basis,? Steve Becker, the coordinating producer for the show said. ?He?s been working with us as an analyst and fill-in co-host for almost two years and has proven to be a natural talent in front of the camera, providing excellent insight and a fantastic personality."
The job will give Cormier an option to fall back on when his fighting career ends, but he's not thinking about that any time soon. Despite his enthusiasm for the job, he told Yahoo Sports on Monday he's first and foremost a fighter.
He loves his television work, but said fighting is what he does best.
"I'm on the cusp of something very special," Cormier said. "Januay 3 will be the culmination of a lifetime of competitive sport for me. Football, wrestling, everything I have done has led me to the MGM Grand [in Las Vegas] on Jan. 3 at UFC 182. The TV stuff is great, and I love doing it, but at the end of the day, fighting is what I do still.
"As I said before, sometimes it seemed like fighting became secondary for other guys when they made it on TV. That's not the case with me. Fighting is what I do. Fighting is what I love to do. Fighting is my present and TV is second. I love doing it, but there is more value to me sitting at that desk with the UFCchampionship than without it."

Rare is the fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing drug (or, in the case of Chael Sonnen, drugs) who doesn't question either the test results, the test procedures or both.
But when a fighter is vindicated, it's almost as if we're not sure how to act.
The UFC rescinded Cung Le's 12-month suspension for testing positive for human growth hormone following his loss to Michael Bisping on Aug. 23 in Macau, China. But Le insisted he hadn't taken anything illegal and several notable figures inthe drug testing community, notably Dr. Don Catlin of AntiDopingResearch.org, came to his defense.
Catlin told MMA Junkie, "I think [the test done by the UFC] is useless. I wouldn?t pay any attention to it all."
Given the overwhelming evidence that the testing procedure was flawed, the UFC rescinded the suspension.
But in its statement announcing the recision, the UFC was very careful to avoid apologizing or otherwise exonerating Le. It announced essentially that there were enough questions about the validity of the test that it would remove Le's suspension.
That, however, wasn't good enough for Le, who released a statement Thursday demanding an apology from the UFC.
"I am extremely happy with the UFC?s decision to rescind my suspension," Le's statement read. "I believe the issues raised in regards to the testing procedures as well as the manner in which the results were determined by the UFC clearly support my assertion that I did not use any performance-enhancing drugs. I am also happy to take away the fact that the UFC has decided to make the proper changes in their testing procedures which will now ensure that no athlete will ever have to endure the same hardship.
"While I feel vindicated in this matter, the UFC?s press release does little in the way of an apology of which I believe I am rightly owed after unfairly enduring the public?s scrutiny. Their decision to announce me as a user of performance-enhancing drugs with little thought to the accuracy of the testing or proper procedures has caused my family and I great pain; that we have now come to know was completely unnecessary had the proper care been taken to ensure my test results were in fact valid proof of impropriety."
There are myriads of fighters who are cheating and using performance-enhancing drugs. All one has to do is to speak privately with fighters who are frustrated by the high number of users to understand it's a serious issue.
The UFC has been working to find a solution and has indicated that, in some form in 2015, it will implement a vigorous drug testing protocol. It will be long overdue when it comes.
But the most important thing in drug testing is to get it right, to be absolutely certain that the test is accurate and all procedures are followed to the letter. There are serious implications which flow from incompetent, or mistaken, tests.
First, and the most egregious, isthe damage it does to the reputation of the fighter singled out. In this case, Le was branded a drug cheat and may never be fully able to escape that reputation. Michael Bisping, who had defeated Le in Macau, noted that Le had gotten off on a loophole or a technicality.
So, while the suspension was removed, it's not as if the UFC took responsibility for the mistake and apologized for it publicly.
But flawed testing hurts the total anti-doping effort, because it gives a strong voice to those who are cheating. If one can't trust the results, it's a Wild West.
Le came under scrutiny when he released a photo on Instagram showing himself to be unusually buff. Bisping saw it and complained. And who could blame Bisping, given that he had fought a number of fighters who were on synthetic testosterone or other PEDs?
Setting up an anti-doping protocol isn't something that can be done in three or four days. And so while the UFC tried to do the right thing, it wound up making a critical, devastating error.
It's an error that may haunt it for a long time.
The answer to this was to become a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency code and to hire an independent outlet, like say the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, to administer its program. That may in fact be what is to come.
But it's way late and the UFC is going to have to dig itself out of a major hole just as it embarks on its new program.
Ridding combat sports of performance-enhancing drugs should be a significant priority for all promoters, but this debacle has complicated the effort and made it all the more difficult.

Anderson Silva has relayed in the past that he considers Jon Jones a friend, and the legendary fighter is supporting the light-heavyweight champ, as he deals with the fallout of his recent drug test. During a recent interview, Silva was asked to weigh-in on the situation, which saw Jones test positive for cocaine metabolites last […]

MMA produced more than its share of interesting stories in 2014 and we covered it all here at Cagewriter. Here are the 20 most-clicked posts of 2014:
1. Ronda Rousey gets put on the spot after quick win (July 6)
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most-trafficked Cagewriter post of 2014 revolved around the UFC's queen bee. Moments after defending her bantamweight title at UFC 175 with a 16-second KO of Alexis Davis, Rousey was asked by UFC commentator Joe Rogan if she would be willing to fight again in three weeks' time to fill a main-event void. Ever the company woman, Rousey said she'd do whatever the UFC needed. But the question clearly incensed UFC president Dana White, as he got into a heated conversation with Rogan afterward in the Octagon. Later, White explained that his issue was with the UFC's production team that fed Rogan the question and not Rogan himself. In the end, Rousey got a nice little break from action and will return from her hiatus on Feb. 28, 2015, to defend her title against Cat Zingano.
2. Leslie Smith gets her ear torn half off by punch (Nov. 15)
Chalk this one up to morbid curiosity. Smith was in a slugfest with Jessica Eye at UFC 180 when Eye caught Smith with a right that gruesomely split Smith's left ear open. The wound would eventually lead to a doctor stoppage, as blood continued to stream down Smith's face.

3. Cung Le tests positive for HGH, receives ban from UFC (Sept. 30)
When a fighter posts a picture like the one Le posted on Instagram (shown at right), he's leaving himself open for criticism ? and potentially added drug tests. After seeing the photo of Le, opponent Michael Bisping requested that the UFC do both blood and urine testing for their fight. The resulting positive tests (excess level of Human Growth Hormone) led to: a nine-month suspension; an additional three-month suspension arbitrarily added on by 'UFC Senior Management' after the initial suspension; the UFC rescinding its suspension of Le after it was reported that Le's tests had been botched; Le demanding an apology from the UFC; and, perhaps as a byproduct of the incident, Le joining a class-action lawsuit against the UFC for alleged 'illegal market monopolization.' Le is still under contract with the UFC.
4. MMA fighter taps out instead of beating on opponent (May 21)
Meet Good Guy MMA Fighter Mike Pantangco. The amateur lost in extraordinary fashion in May. Pantangco appeared to be teeing off on Jeremy Rasner during their Prison City Fight League bout when he kneeled down and tapped out, signaling his submission and forcing the referee to step in and hand the win to his opponent. When asked why he did it, Pantangco said, "We don't get paid, and I know that the only thing [that'd happen] is him to go to the hospital or get hurt. I just [felt] terrible so I'm just going to give him the win."
5. Paul Heyman: Brock Lesnar fought at 50 percent in the UFC (Aug. 7)
Thanks to his wrasslin' background, Lesnar is one of the most popular fighters to have ever stepped into the Octagon. So when Lesnar's manager/friend Paul Heyman opined that Lesnar was '50, 75 percent' when he fought Alistair Overeem in 2011, it resonated. Heyman didn't completely rule out Lesnar returning to the Octagon, but he did say that the star is happy with his current WWE deal.
6. Paige VanZant set to become youngest woman in UFC history (Aug. 7)
The 'Next Ronda Rousey' label gets slapped on pretty well all young, attractive and talented female MMA fighters and VanZant, 20, is the latest to take up that mantle. After being told she was too young to appear on "The Ultimate Fighter" due to the presence of alcohol in the house, she became the youngest woman to ever fight in the UFC on Nov. 22. Her Octagon debut against Kailin Curran was a seesaw affair that ended with VanZant earning a TKO win at 2:54 of the third round. It was recognized as the Fight of the Night and showed VanZant is much more than a pretty face.
7. Mark Hunt drops 20 pounds, delivers massive KO (Sept. 20)
Hunt has an admitted habit of ballooning up in weight in between fights and he apparently came dangerously close to missing the heavyweight limit of 265 before his fight against Roy Nelson on Sept. 20. Hunt reportedly weighed 284 the day before the weigh-in, but he worked off the weight and came in at 264 officially.
8. Bobby Lashley: Separating fact from fiction (Oct. 24)
Fans love their crossover stars. Our Q&A showed another side of the WWE star/MMA veteran.
9. MMA legend Anderson Silva delivers delusional quote (Jan. 13)
After two equally shocking losses at the hands of UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman ? the latter of which produced a devastating broken leg injury that put Silva's career in jeopardy ? the Brazilian was seemingly struggling to cope. In a curious interview with Globo, Silva said he didn't think Weidman should consider their Dec. 28, 2013 bout a win because "it was an accident and I'm pretty sure I would have won the fight." He went on to brag about the power of the kick that broke his own leg, which, to borrow a line from former Cagewriter Elias Cepeda, is tantamount to bragging about bruising a guy's fist after he knocked you out cold.
10. Ronda Rousey-Gina Carano ? the fight that never happened (July 18)
Fans also love their superfights and a Rousey-Carano matchup is a bout most would embrace in short order. White was confident he could get Carano to sign a contract that'd make it happen, but several months later, the superfight's likelihood is bleak. Rousey is scheduled to fight Cat Zingano on Feb. 28 and Carano opted to book another movie deal that should keep her busy for the foreseeable future. White hasn't closed the door completely, but this quote from September doesn't inspire confidence: ?(Carano) is the hardest human being we've ever dealt with. The problem is she allows herself to be handled by these Hollywood (expletive) idiots. In dealing with her people, I don't know if it can be done.?
