Mike Swick set for December 8 dance with Matt Brown

The UFC on FOX 5 lineup received another solid scrap overnight in the form of a bout between welterweights Mike Swick and Matt Brown. Both men are known for their exciting approach to competition in the cage and are more likely to score a stoppage than rely on the judges? scorecards for success.

UFC officials confirmed the bout, while Swick has said a verbal agreement is in place but paperwork still needs to be handled. The December 8 show is headlined by a title-fight between lightweight champion Benson Henderson and top contender Nate Diaz.

The 15-4 Swick?s return to the ring comes a little more than four months after his successful showing against DaMarques Johnson at UFC on FOX 4. Prior to the win Swick had spent more than two years twiddling his thumbs while dealing with a slew of health-related issues.

Swick Says Win Over Johnson Was the Biggest of His Career

Meanwhile, Brown has looked better than ever during his recent three-fight winning streak. He holds an overall record of 15-11 including past victories over the likes of John Howard, Pete Sell, and most recently Luis Ramos. Thirteen of his triumphs have involved some form of finish.

Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey, Jay Hieron: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.9.12

Once upon a time, a UFC fighter would've been lucky if he was able to get a sponsor, and if he did manage to get one, he had to have the words "Condom Depot" emblazoned on the back of his shorts or have drawn on his body an advertisement for an online betting company. But the times they are a-changin'. While the UFC is currently "corn to the core" and cuddled up in bed with Harley-Davidson, one top fighter has just signed a contract with the mother of all sponsors. More after the jump!

  • UFC light-heavyweight champ and part-time car wrecker Jon Jones has signed with Nike, according to the venerable Mike Chiappetta at MMAFighting. This. Is. Huge. As it's a global sponsorship and Jones will reportedly receive his own line of Nike-branded accoutrement, the champ ? and the sport ? will get exposure like never before. Plus, nothing says "mainstream" like a Nike sponsorship.

As usual, MMAPayout has some valuable insight:

If you thought that Jon Jones was one of the highest profile UFC fighters around, you could probably confirm that with the new Nike deal, he will be the most visible worldwide. The deal indicates that the global sportswear maker is dipping its foot in the Octagon which can only be a good thing for MMA and the UFC. The deal creates a new level of earning potential for Jones and a lofty goal for other UFC fighters. At this point, I would think that the Swoosh may be on a "wait and see" approach with the sport as it relates to sponsoring others. But, if the Jones line of clothing is a hit, we may see more of the familiar logo in the Octagon.

  • Strikeforce female bantamweight champ and resident arm-ripper-offer Ronda Rousey has a title defense coming up on August 18, and last night her first "All Access" episode aired on Showtime. In it, UFC president Dana White extolls her virtues, past opponent Miesha Tate shows off her prosthetic limb (which she was forced to get after Rousey took her arm), and Rousey's boxing coach talks about how at first he ignored her but then came around when he realized she was going to be a bigger star than any moke that ever set foot in his gym. I suspect Rousey also fights crime in her spare time, but as Maggie Hendricks pointed out, she probably has to keep that secret. See the episode here.

  • UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck hurt his back in training, so his UFC 151 bout against Jake Ellenberger is off. Taking his place will be erstwhile Octagon veteran (seriously, he last fought in the UFC back in 2005) Jay Hieron. Hieron's been pretty much fighting everywhere else, so hey, why not do a UFC bout? This bout is also actually a rematch ? the two met at an International Fight League event in June, 2006; Hieron took the unanimous decision.

That's it for now, amigos.

Andrei Arlovski?s bout with Tim Sylvia at ONE FC: Pride of a Nation ends in controversy

Though it may not have been on the scale of their UFC championship clashes, the heavyweight tilt between Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski was one of the most anticipated bouts at today?s ONE FC: Pride of a Nation event in Manila. And, when the two big men locked horns, they certainly didn?t disappoint.

Unfortunately, the bout?s result could not boast the same.

Sylvia and Arlovski slugged it out with the ?Pitbull? showing his superiority throughout including in a sequence ultimately setting up the clash?s conclusion. Arlovski dropped ?The Maine-iac? with a slick combo and then rushed in for the finish, throwing a pair of soccer kicks to the downed Sylvia. Though such strikes are legal in the organization, the referee must first give a fighter the green-light to throw them and hadn?t in the case of Arlovski.

The 36-year old Sylvia was then given a chance to recover but ultimately said he could not continue and the bout was ruled a No Contest. With both men under contract to ONE FC it seems likely they may meet again, possibly in October when the company returns with another card.

Also worth noting, former DREAM champion Bibiano Fernandes made a successful debut under the promotion?s banner, while Phil Baroni scored an opening round knockout and Jens Pulver fell by way of strikes in the second stanza of his scrap.

Read below for a full list of ONE FC: Pride of a Nation results:

Honorio Banario def. Andrew Benibe via Knockout Round 3 (Strikes)

Jon Fitch, Nate Diaz, UFC 150: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.8.12

As the saying goes, it's all about the Benjamins ? which, if my handy "Biggie Smalls Street Vernacular Dictionary ? Volume 2" is accurate, means it's ultimately all about money. Money is what fighters get when they take the biggest fights, sign the fattest contracts, and build up the most hype for whatever bouts they have scheduled for that week. And hey, that's not a bad thing. Fighting is a job, and the UFC is the top employer in the field, so why not make that wampum while you can? Anyway, all this should clue you in on what today's morning news roundup is about: money.

  • UFC welterweight Jon Fitch really wants out of his rumored bout against Brazilian Erick Silva at UFC 153 ? or at least, he would much rather have a rematch with Hawaiian fighting legend B.J. Penn. Case in point: the disingenuous-seeming trash-talk Fitch is spewing. I don't think Penn is a coward, most (if not all) of the world doesn't think Penn is a coward, and I seriously doubt Fitch truly thinks Penn is a coward. But Fitch knows a fight with Penn could have a bigger bottom line, so here come the harsh words!

  • UFC lightweight contender Nate Diaz is holding a pen, and the tip of that pen is hovering over a new contract that UFC president Dana White has unfurled and flattened on the table. Seems like a no-brainer that he sticks with the UFC, no? I mean, where else is he going to go? The Strikeforce lightweight champ is his buddy, and for him to go to Bellator, he'd have to sit on the shelf for a while.

  • The media call for UFC 150 was yesterday and MMAWeekly's got the audio. Personally, media calls are all the same to me ? the same spoon-fed hype and storylines, the same questions, the same faux-excitement. They're just something that's done to drive media (and, subsequently, fan) interest, which presumably fuels pay-per-view sales. The only time media calls are interesting is when PRIDE FC champ Fedor Emelianenko and his manager Vadim Finkelstein are on the line and we hear goats and water splashing and all sorts of weird stuff in the background (which actually happened once).

  • The folks at the UFC are helping erect a LGBTQ community center in Las Vegas, N.V., which is a pretty altruistic thing to do if you ask me. MMAJunkie's got the quote from UFC executive Reed Harris:

"The UFC supports many worthwhile causes, and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center's goals of supporting human rights and offering programs for health and wellness are important causes that the entire UFC organization supports," Harris told MMAJunkie.com. "We are pleased to be able to show support for an organization that offers health and wellness programs and seeks to better our community."

This little tidbit has nothing to do with money, but it's a good deed that deserves some recognition.

That's all for now. Now, please, just leave me alone.

Former UFC fighter Jason ?Mayhem? Miller arrested, caught naked in church

Former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller was arrested Monday in Mission Viejo , Calif., after allegedly breaking into a church and vandalizing it with a fire extinguisher. Police responding to the call reportedly found Miller sitting on a couch, naked but coherent. He was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of burglary, and is undergoing a mental evaluation.

Miller found limited success in his time in the Octagon but was considered one of the sport's most colorful personalities. He was also the host of MTV's popular reality show "Bully Beatdown." Miller publicly retired from competition in May of this year after a lackluster performance at UFC 146 led to him to being fired. Since then, he's tried his hand at stand-up comedy, and last week he engaged in an argument with UFC president Dana White over Twitter, where he said "Kill yourself @danawhite we are all begging you."

Ronda Rousey: ?(Cyborg) really disgraced herself and her sport and her country by cheating all those years??

It doesn?t look like Strikeforce star Ronda Rousey has any intention of backing off her stance regarding the need for Cristiane Santos to drop down to 135 pounds to face her. Santos, who held promotional gold at 145 pounds, is currently serving a yearlong suspension after anabolic steroids were found in her system. She has recently said she is unable to make the bantamweight limit in a healthy manner.

However, Rousey isn?t buying it as she made clear during a recent stop by the set of ESPN?s SportsCenter.

?I really don?t think it?s unreasonable for me to expect that when she?s not doing steroids she would lose some weight. She really disgraced herself and her sport and her country by cheating all those years, and I really don?t think the best way to deal with it is to reward her with a title-shot with all the considerations that she wants,? said a to-the-point Rousey. ?I think it?s her only option. I have plenty of other options so if she doesn?t want to do it then I?ll do something else.?

Santos Thinks Rousey is a ?Spoiled Little Girl?

Rousey is currently basking in the glory of her sixth straight win by opening round Armbar, a 54-second finish of Sarah Kaufman earlier this month.

Check out the complete interview with Rousey below where she also talks about the controversy surrounding UFC 151 and the possibility of a career in Hollywood:

UFC President Dana White shrugs off notion of Chael Sonnen as 205-pound title-contender

It didn?t take long for controversial UFC competitor Chael Sonnen to target light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. In fact, Sonnen dropped Jones? name in a recent statement announcing his move to 205-pounds for a fight with Forrest Griffin, saying that winning the belt ?Bones? owns would be akin to taking candy from a child.

However, UFC President Dana White has made it clear Sonnen is nowhere near the front of the line when it comes to light heavyweight contenders and will have to earn his crack at winning the championship.

?He’s a long way away,? said White in an interview with MMAJunkie of Sonnen?s proximity to a title-shot. ?He’s not coming off the (Anderson) Silva fight and just talking his way into a 205-pound world title-shot.?

Sonnen Not on Jones’ Radar at the Moment

?(Sonnen) is going to have to beat a couple of the best of the world. If he beats Forrest Griffin, we’ll shoot him right into the Top 5 and let him fight some of those guys there, and we’ll see what happens,? he concluded.

Sonnen is scheduled to face Griffin on December 29. The two fought once before years ago with Griffin picking up a submission win.

Takanori Gomi meeting Mac Danzig at UFC on Fuel 6 in China

Lightweight Takanori Gomi is one of the most popular fighters in Asia for good reason considering his success in organizations like Shooto and PRIDE. Now, it looks like Gomi will fight in front of his rabid fanbase this November 10 for the first time as a member of the UFC.

According to a Tweet from Mac Danzig, he and Gomi have agreed to face off at UFC on Fuel 6 in Macau, China. The card will mark the organization?s debut in the nation.

Gomi is coming off a strike-based stoppage of Eiji Mitsuoka at UFC 144, snapping a two-fight losing streak for ?The Fireball Kid?. The iconic 33-year old holds an overall record of 33-8 with nineteen finishes including thirteen by way of TKO.

A Closer Look at Gomi’s Finish of Mitsuoka

Comparably, the 21-9-1 Danzig also found success in his last outing, scoring a decision win over Efrain Escudero in April. He has also beaten the likes of Joe Stevenson and Mark Bocek inside the Octagon since emerging as the winner of the Ultimate Fighter Season 6.

UFC on Fuel 6 is headlined by a middleweight match-up between Cung Lee-Rich Franklin and also features Dong Hyun Kim colliding with Paulo Thiago.

Wanderlei Silva, Sarah Kaufman, Tyrone Mims: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.13.12

One fighter should be riding off into the sunset, one fighter has the biggest fight of her career coming up, and one fighter was taken from us too soon. It's a mixed bag of news in today's roundup, so come, grab your cup of joe (or java, or mud, or whatever it is you coffee drinkers imbibe) and join me. I brought bagels!

  • UFC president Dana White says that Wanderlei Silva ? the legendary Brazilian fighter and PRIDE FC champ ? will fight again. Hooray? I guess? Look, I love the "Axe Murderer" as much as the next guy, and watching some of his old fights is akin to watching a snuff film where the participants wear four-ounce gloves and fight shorts. But it's an undeniable fact that the man has gotten old and is nowhere near the killer he once was. Remember what happened when he fought Quinton Jackson? Or Chris Leben? I don't want to see something like that again. Do you? I say give him an executive position in the UFC's Brazil office and let him smile and shake hands and stuff.

  • Female bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey is headlining a Strikeforce this weekend, and of course you're going to be inundated with all sorts of things pertaining to her (she is the "new" face of women's MMA, after all). So, for the sake of balance and yin and yang and whatnot, here's some Sarah Kaufman stuff. She is challenging Rousey for her belt, you know.

  • As I hinted at yesterday, a fighter died at an amateur MMA event in South Carolina on Saturday night. His name was Tyrone Mims. This was Mims' first fight, and it was fully-sanctioned and under the auspices of South Carolina State Athletic Commission. The cause of death won't be known until an autopsy is performed (one is scheduled), but according to onsite accounts, it didn't appear as if Mims took an inordinate amount of damage in his bout, which has led to speculation that a pre-existing condition could've been a contributing factor. What sort of medical screening do amateur fighters go through? It varies by state ? in New York or South Dakota, a person can step into the cage after signing a waiver and maybe getting a quick look-over by a doctor, while in South Carolina you need the standard bloodwork done (HIV, Hepatitis B and C), an eye exam and the thumbs-up from a physician. Regardless of what pre-fight screening Mims went through, though, it's still a tragedy that he lost his life. He stepped into the cage and took part in a sport we all love; let's honor him by never forgetting and by striving to make our sport better.

That's all for now. Today's the last day of my temp gig here at Cagewriter, but you can expect at least one more post from me, so you can post your parting insults there.

Initial autopsy report inconclusive in South Carolina fighter?s death

An initial autopsy performed on Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, an amateur fighter who died on Saturday night after competing at a regional fight show in South Carolina, has proven inconclusive, according to the Charleston County Coroner. Toxicology tests are pending.

Mims was stepping into the cage for the first time, and was competing at an event called "Fight Night at the Point VI." He allegedly suffered minimal damage during his bout, and witness accounts had him dominating throughout the first round. But Mims began appearing exhausted in the second round, andwhen the 30-year-old seemed unable to improve his position, the referee stopped the bout. Mims was taken backstage; when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Mims, a Georgia resident, was taking part in a reality show titled "Georgia Boy's Grits-n-Glory." The show released the following statement:

One of the fighters, who happened to be our own Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, was fatally injured tonight, possibly as a result of his fight. The promoters and the South Carolina Fight Commission consulted with the fighters and all involved and decided as a result of the death of one of their own we should call off the rest of the fights. The promoters and the Athletic Commission did everything in their power according to protocol and this accident was beyond their control. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll understand as we deal with the gravity of the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Teestea and his immediate family, which include his five children.

This is the second mixed martial arts-related death in South Carolina history. In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham died from a brain hemorrhage after suffering a knockout at an event in Aiken, S.C.

As per state regulation, amateur fighters must pass an eye exam, be screened for HIV and Hepatitis, and pass a cursory examination by a physician prior to getting in the cage. It is unknown if Mims had completed those requirements.

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."

Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?

Canada: Always blame Canada.

Does any one person or group deserve the blame for UFC 151 being canceled? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Mike Swick Doesn?t Know the Meaning of ?Ring Rust?

Two and a half years ago, Mike Swick left the Octagon plagued by medical issues and a shadow of his former self. But the TUF 1 veteran that entered the cage tonight at UFC on FOX 4 seemed to be every bit the exciting fighter he once was ? and he was more than capable when it came to sealing the deal for the win.

From the outset, the bout between Swick and DaMarques Johnson was a showcase of explosive brutality, with "Quick" cracking Johnson with a right hand that forced the TUF 9 runner-up to consider the wisdom of engaging in any slugfests. Again and again that right hand landed, but Johnson mixed things up by taking the fight to the ground. There, he was on top, raining down punishment and attempting submissions while Swick struggled to survive.

Swick, however, was a man determined, and when Round Two began, he caught one of Johnson's kicks, threw him down, and dropped a bomb ? another right hand ? square on Johnson's jaw. The TUF 9er was out cold at the 1:20 mark of the second round.

With the win, Swick answered a ton of questions in terms of whether or not he could return to form. He also proved one very important thing: Despite a two-and-a-half year layoff, Mike Swick doesn't know the meaning of the phrase "ring rust".

Georges St-Pierre says he?s medically cleared to fight

The UFC welterweight champion is now cleared to compete. Georges St-Pierre shared the good news on his Facebook page.

Yesterday was the final chapter of my Road to Recovery- I'm now medically cleared to compete in professional mixed martial arts! Big thanks to all my fans for the amazing support during those 9 long months of rehab- couldn't have done it without you.

St-Pierre tore his ACL while preparing for a bout with Carlos Condit. While GSP rehabbed, Condit fought Nick Diaz for the interim welterweight belt. Condit won with a tight decision. Since he was not given a chance to defend the interim belt, it turned out to be just a really shiny, kind of heavy reminder of Condit's No. 1 contender status.

The two are slated to fight at UFC 154 in Montreal. GSP's last fight was on April 30, 2011, against Jake Shields. By the time he fights on Nov. 17, St-Pierre will have had 572 days off between fights.

Will the time off affect GSP or will he pick up where he left off? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Alan Belcher withdraws from UFC 153 with ?spinal fracture?

After the UFC yanked Vitor Belfort out of an October match-up with Alan Belcher in order to face light heavyweight champion Jon Jones a month earlier, many fans were left wondering how the organization would handle the vacancy considering Belcher?s status as one of the top 185ers on the roster. While names like Chris Weidman and Wanderlei Silva were thrown around, in the end it looks like ?The Talent? won?t be fighting at UFC 153 after all based on an injury he sustained while training for the expected tilt.

?Everyone?s asking if I am mad at the UFC, Jones, (and) Belfort. (The) answer is no. This is a blessing in disguise. I have a spinal fracture,? wrote Belcher on Twitter.

Belcher: “I Don’t Plan on Losing Anytime Soon”

While the injury sounds severe, apparently it won?t keep Belcher out of action for very long, as the 28-year old added a follow-up message saying he expected to be ready to rumble by November and wanted a Top 5 foe, specially mentioning Weidman as an option he was interested in.

The 18-6 Belcher is currently on a four-fight winning streak including finishes of Patrick Cote and most recently Rousimar Palhares. The UFC currently has two shows scheduled for November with UFC 154 on November 17 in Montreal seeming to be a logical destination.

Additionally, it has since been announced the rematch between light heavyweights Phil Davis-Wagner Prado has been moved from UFC on FX 5 to UFC 153 to replace Belcher-Belfort.

The Agony of Defeat and How Three Fighters Have Dealt with It

Watch a fighter's face when he's won and the story is all there ? the relief, the elation, the euphoria. And yet, what of the other half to that equation? What of those who've been forced to swallow the bitter pill of defeat? It's an inescapable truth that, for someone to be the victor, someone else must lose, and that karmic flipside is what makes the sport a cruel and harsh mistress to all who dare strap on four-ounce gloves and step into the cage. To compete is to flirt with a very particular, very exacting kind of agony. For the sake of examining further what it means to be on the losing side of things, Cagewriter tracked down a trio of accomplished fighters to get their perspective. The three all share two common denominators: they're very, very good at what they do, and they've all dealt with defeat.

Tom DeBlass, UFC Fighter

In 2003, New Jersey native Tom DeBlass fought his first amateur bout. He'd been a track star in college, and had only three months of martial arts training, but hey, what the heck, right? Unfortunately, his opponent was veteran kickboxer and experienced mixed martial arts fighter, and things didn't go so well. So DeBlass went back to the drawing board and sought to gain the skills necessary to succeed. By the time he made his return to the cage, he was now a black belt under Ricardo Almeida, with successful runs as a competitor in everything from the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds to the Pan-Ams to the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championship Trials. He was, quite literally, a completely different person.

"I lost my first fight as a youngster because I really just ? I didn't even train jiu-jitsu, I didn't even know anything," says the 30-year-old DeBlass. "With that skill set, I would've lost a hundred out of a hundred times, because I didn't know any better."

It took only seven pro fights in New Jersey's Ring of Combat promotion for DeBlass to earn his shot in the UFC's Octagon ? seven fights in a little over a year and a half, each one flawless and won by quick submission or knockout or protracted war. But when that shot came, it was for a UFC on Fuel TV held in Sweden, and it was on short notice against a vastly more-experienced Cyrille Diabate. No one says no when the UFC comes calling, so DeBlass took the fight; he lost via majority decision ? his first defeat as a pro and his first loss in nine years.

"This one with Cyrille, it hit me pretty hard," says DeBlass. "I was pretty upset. Just because I know, with all respect to him, I'd finish him probably fairly quickly if I was in a full training camp. This was one fight where I was really, really out of shape. Usually in between fights I stay in shape, but I'd hurt my ankle. I'd pulled out of a Ring of Combat fight, and I was letting my ankle heal. I was on vacation with my fiance the week before, and I got fat and I got out of shape. I knew that, so it was kind of a terrible feeling going into a fight knowing you're not prepared for it. But I still thought I could win. And you know, the fight was going my way. Not even just going my way, it was an easy fight. I was dominating. Then I just had nothing left. I was so exhausted. And when I lost, I was just very disappointed ? I'm still very disappointed."

What did DeBlass do to cope? "Right away, as soon as possible, I tried to find the positive," he says. "I changed my whole training. As much as I was doing before, I'm doing things differently now, working on different aspects. And everything happens for a reason, man. In this sport, you've got to be ready for anything."

The UFC already had DeBlass scheduled to fight on another UFC on Fuel TV, but the bout was cancelled when his opponent got injured. Regardless, DeBlass ? who's moving down to middleweight for the first time ? fully anticipates being ready for anything when the UFC calls again. Just as he did after losing that first amateur bout all those years ago, he's making the adjustments necessary to assure future success.

James Jenkins, Ring of Combat Fighter

Things were going great for James Jenkins until he walked face-first into a nose-breaking right hand. Up to that point, the 26-year-old Matt Serra/Ray Longo product was beating all comers in Ring of Combat ? so much so that, to give Jenkins someone to fight for the promotion's featherweight belt, an opponent was flown in from Chicago. Still, Jenkins was the heavy favorite going into the bout. But all it takes is one mistake in this game. One mistake.

"I felt absolutely horrible," says the Long Island, N.Y. native. "I felt like I had a great shot in front of me and I had worked hard to get this far. I didn't have any regrets as far as training hard, I didn't take him lightly ? I could be fighting a 13-year old and I wouldn't take him lightly."

Says Jenkins: "I'm a prideful guy. I don't take losing? I couldn't lose at a game of Monopoly. So this was pretty rough. It was hard. A lot of bad feelings. I don't want to have to feel it again for ? well, if I could have my way, never."

What was it like for Jenkins after the fight? "I get down to the locker room, and I was just trying to wash the blood off my face and everything," he says. "I think for a few days I did nothing but think about it. I'd be sitting in a car with my girlfriend and I was just start zoning out thinking about it. For a while, I had this feeling like I could just go back in time. Like if I could just think about it hard enough, I could go back in time and I could fix it and I could make it all better. I had to sit there and really tell myself, 'You can't go backwards. What's done is done. The only thing I can do is work for the future.' That's the only thing you can do when [expletive] goes wrong, you just have to work to make sure it doesn't happen again."

What's next for the still-rising featherweight star? "I took a little time off to be with my friends and family, but now I want to be back in the gym and fighting at the next Ring of Combat. I want to come out with a strong showing. I really think that's the only thing that will take away some of the bad feelings. You know, to get a win."

When Cagewriter interviewed Jenkins, it was outside of former UFC champ Matt Serra's gym, right before a training session; clearly, Jenkins is already on his way back to the cage.

Dan Miller, UFC Fighter

There are few fighters in the UFC ? or even the world ? who can impress in defeat like the veteran middleweight-turned-welterweight Dan Miller. In eleven fights in the Octagon, Miller has amassed a 6-5 record, and those five losses were after hard-fought scraps against the likes of Chael Sonnen, Demian Maia, Michael Bisping, Nate Marquardt and Rousimar Palhares ? tough guys, one and all. Still, the New Jersey native knows of the sting a fresh "L" on your record can leave.

"It is tough," he says. "I going into every fight believing that I can win, and wanting to win, but it's part of the sport and somebody has to lose." He adds: "The way I feel is, as long as I put everything I had into it and got beaten by a better fighter that night, it makes it a little easier."

"For me it was never okay. I never walked out of the ring not disappointed in myself. But again, it's something that sucks, but it's not the end of the world. I go into the gym and it makes me work harder. Every time I lost I just tried to get better and improve myself."

Miller's advice to any young bucks out there who find themselves on the inevitable losing end? "Keep your head up and learn from it, basically. Pretty much everyone is going to lose at some point in their career, and it's one of those things where you're going to have to learn from it. If you didn't learn from it, then it's bad."

* * * *

That's it for me, folks. It's been a blast writing for Cagewriter, and hopefully you'll see me again. Follow me here on Twitter; this is where I blog about local fights shows of both the sanctioned and unsanctioned variety; this is the book I wrote on underground fighting. I've been writing about MMA since 2001, and I sure as hell ain't stopping now!
