As Kevin Iole reported, UFC 151 has been canceled. The show, scheduled for Sept. 1, was supposed to feature Jon Jones' title defense against Dan Henderson. Because Henderson sustained a knee injury and Jones turned down Chael Sonnen as a replacement, the entire Las Vegas event has been scrapped.
Jones will go on to fight Lyoto Machida at UFC 152 in Toronto while Henderson rehabilitates, but the card had 10 other fights featuring 20 other fighters. Though the fights will likely be put on other, future cards, moving a fight can severely affect their finances.
With most fighters making the Octagon three or four times a year and only getting paid by the UFC after a fight, they plan their finances around fight dates. Charlie Brenneman, who was supposed to face Kyle Noke at UFC 151, tweeted his unhappiness to Jones.
Shane Roller was scheduled to fight Jacob Volkmann and didn't believe the news at first.
Danny Castillo would like to know if you could spot him a $50.
Lightweight Joe Lauzon was not scheduled for the card, but wrote a good explanation as to why fighters would be angry about the cancellation.
Not only has this screwed over all the fans that bought tickets, non refundable airfare, took off work, made arrangements, etc? but think of all the fighters. Fighters that put in full camps, flew people in that helped them trains, etc. By the time I am actually fight, I spend close to 20k between corners, flights, expenses, coaches, etc? and then to have the whole show cancelled because ONE guy didn't want to fight. This ONE guy that had trained an entire camp, who was the CHAMP and at the top of his weight class, who was going to fight someone who didn't do the camp, and was fighting UP a weight class.
