When Jeff Meyer first joined his brother Barry Meyer in promoting amateur bouts, he wasn?t altogether convinced that fight fans would pay good money to watch anything other than pros. A couple decades of filling venues later, however, and the brothers? Tuff-N-Uff promotion is not just a fan favorite in the Las Vegas area, it is also the top amateur MMA organization in North America.
As for how, exactly, that happened, Jeff is modest. ?To be honest, I think a big part of that is because we luckily have been riding the coattails of the UFC,? he tells Cagewriter.
?For twenty five dollars, fans can come to a Tuff-N-Uff event, at a nice venue, and watch amazing fights. Let?s face it ? MMA is usually a lot more expensive to watch, live. But it?s amazing to watch, live. Making a great live card, affordable, during a time when the UFC has grown so much, helps. Also, Las Vegas doesn?t have a professional sports team, and it?s historically been a big fight city. ?
An inexpensive product wouldn?t be worth buying if it wasn?t also a quality one, however. Scores of talented and exciting future UFC fighters, including current world champ Ronda Rousey and former title challenger Jon Fitch, first went through the Tuff-N-Uff ranks.
Tuff-N-Uff?s expert talent scouting and matchmaking has consistently resulted in top talent putting on great fights in their ring and cage. Jeff says that, up until his passing in 2013, his brother Barry did a great deal of the scouting for the event.
?My brother did a lot of scouting,? he says.
?Now, we?ve got talent scouts who watch more fights than anyone, and who also go to local gyms and check fighters out, first hand.?
Jeff says that a big part of how Tuff-N-Uff is able to attract top amateur talent is the professional feel to its shows. ?If you put on a professional show that runs smoothly, it gives the competitors the feeling they might expect at the next level,? he explains.
?It?s also no secret that we produce top level fighters. Fighters often go from our events to big professional events. To me, the blue print is kind of like this ? Tuff-N-Uff as an amateur, then the RFA, as a pro, and after that, the UFC.?
Alan Jouban, a UFC welterweight who fights Saturday in Brazil against Warlley Alves, echoes Meyer?s sentiments. Jouban fought as an amateur in Tuff-N-Uff, before getting the call to go pro by the RFA, and then the UFC.
?Fighting in Tuff-N-Uff prepared me for what it was like as a professional,? he said.
?They?ve got the lights, cameras, and nice venues. They really helped me develop to the point where I was ready to go pro, and be successful.?
Eight female competitors will look to take their next steps towards professional success at Tuff-N-Uff?s Friday event in Las Vegas. The promotion has partnered with Invicta FC to host two tournaments (one at featherweight, and one at lightweight), with professional contracts with the top all-female promotion. As expected, the eight women come from all over (they hail from seven different states, in all), and have solid records thus far (their combined record is 26-5).
Meyer says the potentially star-making event tonight is simply carrying on Tuff-N-Uff?s top-notch tradition. ?We want to put on fights with the world?s best talent,? he says.
?Always.?

When Georges St-Pierre announced an indefinite leave from fighting based mainly on what he claimed was rampant PED use in MMA, many bristled at the notion that it was as bad as GSP was intimating.
Some proclaimed that the popular French-Canadian fighter, who often found himself at the center of PED accusations throughout his storied career himself, was making excuses, and that he simply could not compete with the new breed of fighter that was on its way up.
But St-Pierre held fast to his longtime belief that a large percentage of fighters from every rung of the rankings ladder are getting a pharmaceutical leg up on the competition.
?I knew [PED use] was a big problem. I knew for a long time, and it was bothering me and bothering me more and more. People act like it?s a big secret. People know it?s a big problem. It?s not like a race or a game,? St-Pierre told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour on Monday. "I?m not surprised so many guys have gotten busted. [There are] going to be other names coming up. If they keep doing the right testing, [there are] going to be other guys coming up [positive]. I believe this is the tip of the iceberg. A lot of fighters are going to be caught.?
The former UFC welterweight champion said that he was offered a superfight with Anderson Silva at UFC 186 in April, and he declined the fight because he was busy with other projects and because he was still concerned about PEDs in the sport. St-Pierre says he?s glad he didn?t take the bout with Silva, who tested positive for two steroids ahead of his UFC 183 bout with Nick Diaz.
?[Dana] called me to fight in Montreal and he texted me to see if I was interested in fighting Anderson Silva right before this thing came out. I said no. My answer was negative. Then the whole thing came out and it was bad,? St-Pierre recalled.
?You put your life in jeopardy every time you step in the Octagon. It?s a fighting sport ? a full-contact sport. I?ve always considered performance-enhancing drugs like a weapon and you shouldn?t be allowed to fight like this. I think the fight [between Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz] shouldn?t have happened, but unfortunately it did and nobody got hurt, which is a good thing.?
One thing GSP cautioned against is lumping together all of the teams and gyms of fighters caught cheating.
?People say, ?None of my guys use PEDs.? We don?t know. If someone gets caught [using PEDs] in Montreal [at Tristar], it doesn?t mean the whole team is dirty. If someone got caught from Black House, it doesn?t mean that the whole team is dirty,? St-Pierre pointed out. ?[Tristar coach Firas Zahabi] talks openly against performance-enhancing drugs, but if someone after the hour of training decides to go [home] and inject himself with some kind of substance, Firas can?t do anything about it. It?s not his fault; it?s out of his control. Every individual is responsible for his own actions.?
Although he believes that it?s up to each fighter as an individual to do the right thing when it comes to PED use, St-Pierre believes it will take a collective effort from the UFC and its stakeholders to clean up the problem. He remains somewhat cynical, however.
?They need to do something. They need to find a solution for the safety of the competitors,? St-Pierre said. ?I wonder if the safety of the competitors is as important as the financial [interests of the UFC].?

The search to find the next apt opponent for Jon Jones may be over ? at least, that's the case if someone who knows the UFC light heavyweight champion better than most has his way.
Jones? younger brother Chandler ? as in, New England Patriots Super Bowl champion Chandler Jones ? told TMZ that he would be up for giving his older brother a whooping, like he used to before Jon became arguably the most dangerous fighter in UFC history.
?Me and my brother used to fight all the time when we were young, and I'm pretty sure I can take him down now. I am way bigger than he is,? said Chandler, who outweighs his brother by roughly 40 pounds and outreaches him by an inch. ?I would just throw him to the ground.?
To prove it wouldn?t be a self-serving publicity stunt, the younger Jones suggested they could perhaps choose a charity to donate the money raised by the potential sibling superfight.
?It will be fun if we actually did a one-round match for charity; that would be fun. If I win, he would have to donate to the charity of my choice and vice versa. I don't know how my coach would feel about it. I don't think it would fly."
It sounds like the standout Pats defensive end is hinting that the fight wouldn?t be a lighthearted sparring session like most charity bouts end up being. Otherwise, why would his coach have an issue with him making a charitable appearance?
As a body language expert pointed out last month, Jones, who revealed in his much-maligned Fox Sports interview that his brothers were giving him some flak over the news he tested positive for cocaine, ?Bones? was very uncomfortable talking about their disappointment in him over the incident. Since then Jones, who once told Sherdog that he was the kid who ?snitched on? marijuana users growing up, admitted that he used cocaine ?quite a few times? in college. Such a public admission likely doesn?t sit well with Chandler or their older brother, Indianapolis Colts defensive end Arthur Jones, as both players are lauded as much for their clean images as they are for their impressive gridiron skills.
Maybe this is Chandler?s way of teaching his brother a very public life lesson with some tough love, like Jon and Arthur used to impart on him in the front yard of their childhood home in Rochester, NY.
For his part, Chandler has spent time training with his brother at the Jackson-Winklejohn gym in Albuquerque. Maybe he knows something we don?t in terms of how to beat Jon.
What do Cagereaders think? Who wins between these two super athlete siblings?

Three high-profile mixed martial arts fighters filed a class-action lawsuit Tuesday accusing the UFC of illegally monopolizing power in the industry by eliminating its competition.
Former UFC fighters Jon Fitch and Nate Quarry, along with Cung Le, who is still under contract with the UFC, also accuse the Zuffa-owned company of "artificially suppressing fighters'" earnings with their contracts and practices.
The civil suit alleges that the UFC has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by illegally scheming to create a non-competitive marketplace that restricts the earning capabilities of fighters, as well as coercing fighters to relinquish rights to their names and likenesses. The plaintiffs seek injunctive relief and damages, and the suit claims to represent a class of current and former UFC fighters in similar situations as Le, Quarry and Fitch.
"This lawsuit is about fairness," Quarry told reporters during a press conference in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday. "It's about a fair market value for the athletes. ? It's time for those things to change. We deserve to be out in a free market place."
Zuffa is primarily owned by billionaires Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, along with UFC president Dana White.
The UFC has had a stranglehold on MMA for the majority of the 21st century, and Zuffa has either bought up or driven out several other viable promotions. The suit references past statements made by White and other UFC officials comparing the promotion and its practices to that of the NFL and NBA, but makes a distinction in regards to those leagues' ability to foster an open market by creating a bidding war among individual teams.
The lawsuit alleges that the UFC has maintained control of more than 90 percent of the revenue derived from live MMA bouts nationwide. It also maintains that the UFC has allegedly retaliated against fighters who have worked with or who have announced intentions to work with rival promoters.
?UFC?s threats are taken seriously by fighters because they know that a UFC ban will substantially diminish, if not end, their ability to earn a living at their chosen profession,? said plaintiffs? co-counsel Joseph Saveri of Saveri Law Firm, Inc. ?These MMA professionals deserve the right to take back their careers.?
For its part, the UFC posted the following statement to its website:
"The UFC is aware of the action filed today but has not been served, nor has it had the opportunity to review the document. The UFC will vigorously defend itself and its business practices."

After Vitor Belfort tweeted in Portuguese that he'd be facing Chris Weidman for the middleweight title on Feb. 28 in Los Angeles, UFC president Dana White took to Instagram to clarify matters.
White jokingly referred to Belfort as "Our new head of p.r.," in making the announcement. Weidman-Belfort will be the main event with a women's bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and unbeaten No. 1 contender Cat Zingano as the co-main on Feb. 28 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Our new head of PR vitorbelfort announcement today. Weidman vs Belfort/ Ronda vs Cat 2/28/2015? http://t.co/K1lLsj2rYn
? Dana White (@danawhite) October 29, 2014
Weidman and Belfort were originally supposed to fight on Dec. 6 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, but Weidman broke his left hand in training and on Sept. 22 had to postpone the fight.
It turns out to be a great deal for Staples, which was to host UFC 176 on Aug. 2. That card was supposed to be headlined by a featherweight title fight between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, but was canceled when Aldo was injured and had to pull out. The UFC tried to reschedule, but Staples is one of the country's busiest arenas and it couldn't be worked out.
The Aldo-Mendes fight was moved to Brazil as the main event of UFC 179, which Aldo won by an impressive unanimous decision in one of 2014's best fights.
Rousey-Zingano had been expected to be the co-main event of UFC 182 on Jan. 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.White told Yahoo Sports via text message that a lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Myles Jury has been added to the Las Vegas card, which is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

UFC featherweight star Clay Guida checks in this week and lends the Cagewriter team a hand by breaking down the main and co-main events for tonight's big UFC 179 world title card in Rio. Check out Clay's picks, and then let us know who you've got in the comments section!
UFC 179 main event - Jose Aldo defends his featherweight UFC world title against Chad Mendes in a rematch
This fight is a long time coming, since Jose and Chad's first fight two and a half years ago. Jose Aldo has definitely proven to be arguably one of the greatest fighters of all time.
You don't say that about just anybody. It's been what, five, six, seven years since he's last been defeated?
I remember seeing him fight for the first time in the WEC, when Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver the first time, and he knocked the dude out. I thought, 'wow, this guy has got something. He's talented.' We've also seen Aldo shake off some pretty good wrestlers over the years.
You could make the argument that Aldo was more impressive in the WEC than he has been in the UFC, but you know how it is. In the UFC, you're fighting the best of the best and top athletes every time out. Every fight is five rounds, and Aldo doesn't get any easy fights, ever.
Tonight, however, I think Chad Mendes is going to have Aldo's number. Compared to the last time he fought Aldo, and lost, Chad is much more well-rounded on his feet, now.
He's more calm, and he feels more at home standing and trading. The difference in this fight will be if Chad gets to take Aldo down, which I think he can do. I hope they've been working on that.
We've seen it time and again with Aldo. By the fourth and fifth rounds, he's often already done so much damage that he can usually coast. He's either leg-kicked you into oblivion, or he's worn you down some other way where rounds four and five don't make a difference.
I think it's going to be a different story this time around, with Chad. Unfortunately, in the first fight they only had five minutes to feel each other out, but I'm sure both camps have been doing a lot of game planning around footage study.
I think ground game and conditioning and who drives harder in those championship rounds is going to be crucial, and I think Chad can win there. We've seen Jose take some pretty good shots. He's got a good chin.
We've also seen Chad take shots, and he's got a pretty good chin. Both men are good on the ground, and have knockout power. I think whoever shows a little bit more grit in the later rounds is going to win.
I've got to go with the wrestler in this one. Looking at both their recent histories, I think this has a good chance of going all five rounds.
Sometimes the five rounders are awesome, though. This one is going to be a banger of a fight, and I'm looking forward to my buddy Chad bringing the belt back to the States.
Light heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis meet in the UFC 170 co-main event
As a former NCAA Division I wrestling national champion, Phil is hard to keep off your legs, man. But, I think fighting and losing to Anthony Johnson had an effect on him.
When someone hits you as hard as Johnson hit you, it makes you think, and pause. And, if another guy can hit you as hard as Johnson, it's Glover Teixeira.
We saw that with Glover's fight against Jon Jones last April. Jon beat him up and down, but there was always one hook, or one cross that Glover would come back with and hit Jones to keep him honest.
I was sitting front-row for that one and Jon's eyes got as big as baseballs everytime Glover hit him with one of those. That type of power is an intangible.
Not to mention that, every time Jon took Glover down, Glover got back up quickly. We know that Phil is going to want to get the take down in the first few minutes, but it's going to be hard for him to win if he can't keep Glover down.
Both fighters are coming off of tough decision losses, so you know they are both looking to prove something. But I think Phil may have some trouble getting over his last loss, more than Glover has with his.
I love Penn State, where Phil wrestled, and I'd like to see him bring one back to his home town, but this one is a toss-up with the slight edge going to Glover. Realistically, I've got to go with Glover by decision.

The UFC announced Wednesday the makings of a monster card on Fox for January, with the main event pitting Alexander Gustafsson against Anthony Johnson withthe winner earning the next shot at the UFC light heavyweight title.
The bout will be on Jan. 24 in Stockholm, Sweden, at Tele2 Arena in Sweden, a dome which can hold in excess of 30,000 fans for soccer and likely more for mixed martial arts. It willl be shown live nationally in the U.S. on Fox.
The No. 1-ranked Gustafsson was supposed to rematchchampion Jon Jones for the belt in the main event of UFC 178 in Las Vegas on Sept. 27, but had to pull out because of a knee injury. He'll know fight the No. 3-ranked Johnson for the right to meet the winner of the Jan. 3 championship bout between Jones and No. 2 Daniel Cormier that is behind held in Las Vegas.
"This is going to be an epic event,? Gustafsson said in a statement released by the UFC. ?I want more than 30,000 fans to come and witness me win on Jan. 24. Then I?m going to go and get the title. My journey back to the top starts now."
Johnson, who was recently reinstated by the UFC after allegations of domestic violence against him could not be proven, said he is eager to challenge Gustafsson in Gustafsson's home country.
Johnson is coming off a decisive victory over Phil Davis in the co-main event of UFC 172 and a first-round knockout of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC on Fox in San Jose on July 26.
"This fight might be on his home turf, but I?m ready to go over to Sweden and prove that I?m the next in the line for the UFC light heavyweight title,? Johnson said in a statement. ?I?m not intimidated by fighting in front of Alex?s hometown fans. I?m going to go in there and look for the knockout like I do in all of my fights. I can?t wait for this."
The co-main event features Dan Henderson's return to middleweight against Gegard Mousasi. Matt Brown will meet former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine on the main card.

MEXICO CITY -- Jessica Eye and Leslie Smith engaged in a spirited slugfest for the better part of the first round, until a right hand by Eye landed squarely on Smith's left ear in the waning seconds of the round on the preliminary card at UFC 180 Saturday in Mexico City Arena.
It split Smith's ear open, sending blood pouring out and covering the side of her face. In between rounds, doctors took a long time to look at the ear and opted to allow Smith to continue.
But not long after the second began, the fighters clinched and Eye then connected with a couple of short rights from close range that opened it again. After another Eye right, referee Herb Dean called time to have the doctors examine it again when the ear was flapping down.
When it was shown on the gigantic video board in the arena, the crowd let out a loud "Ewww!"
After an examination, Dean stopped it on the advice of the ringside physicians. Smith angrily protested, but Dean had no choice but to stop it at 1:30 of the second, giving Eye the TKO victory in the women's bantamweight bout.
Smith was competitive and landing good shots of her own, but the risk to her health was too great to allow the fight to go forward.
"When I connected and saw her ear blow up, that became my main target," Eye said. "I was going to keep hitting it until they stopped the fight or it fell off. My goal is to be the first girl in the UFC to get a knockout win. I know I?ll do it. Now I?ve climbed another rung on the ladder, and I?ll look around and see what my options are, but 'Im almost to the top."
