Three high-profile mixed martial arts fighters filed a class-action lawsuit Tuesday accusing the UFC of illegally monopolizing power in the industry by eliminating its competition.
Former UFC fighters Jon Fitch and Nate Quarry, along with Cung Le, who is still under contract with the UFC, also accuse the Zuffa-owned company of "artificially suppressing fighters'" earnings with their contracts and practices.
The civil suit alleges that the UFC has violated the Sherman Antitrust Act by illegally scheming to create a non-competitive marketplace that restricts the earning capabilities of fighters, as well as coercing fighters to relinquish rights to their names and likenesses. The plaintiffs seek injunctive relief and damages, and the suit claims to represent a class of current and former UFC fighters in similar situations as Le, Quarry and Fitch.
"This lawsuit is about fairness," Quarry told reporters during a press conference in San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday. "It's about a fair market value for the athletes. ? It's time for those things to change. We deserve to be out in a free market place."
Zuffa is primarily owned by billionaires Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, along with UFC president Dana White.
The UFC has had a stranglehold on MMA for the majority of the 21st century, and Zuffa has either bought up or driven out several other viable promotions. The suit references past statements made by White and other UFC officials comparing the promotion and its practices to that of the NFL and NBA, but makes a distinction in regards to those leagues' ability to foster an open market by creating a bidding war among individual teams.
The lawsuit alleges that the UFC has maintained control of more than 90 percent of the revenue derived from live MMA bouts nationwide. It also maintains that the UFC has allegedly retaliated against fighters who have worked with or who have announced intentions to work with rival promoters.
?UFC?s threats are taken seriously by fighters because they know that a UFC ban will substantially diminish, if not end, their ability to earn a living at their chosen profession,? said plaintiffs? co-counsel Joseph Saveri of Saveri Law Firm, Inc. ?These MMA professionals deserve the right to take back their careers.?
For its part, the UFC posted the following statement to its website:
"The UFC is aware of the action filed today but has not been served, nor has it had the opportunity to review the document. The UFC will vigorously defend itself and its business practices."
Below is the lawsuit, in full:

After stopping former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson in August, Rafael dos Anjos complained that he was being overlooked.
[DraftKings: Build your ultimate fantasy MMA team today!.]
After dismantling Anthony Pettis Saturday in a shockingly one-sided performance, dos Anjos will be overlooked no more.
The Brazilian completed an incredible nine-month run Saturday by winning all five rounds and lifting the lightweight title from Pettis in the main event of UFC 185 at American Airlines Center.
Coupled with Joanna Jedrzejczyk's victory over Carla Esparza in the women's strawweight title bout in the co-main event, the show became the first where two titles changed hands since UFC 92.
Neither fight was close. Jedrzejczyk stopped Esparza in the second round, using striking and superb takedown defense. Dos Anjos did just about everything but stop Pettis in the performance of his lifetime.
Since a loss in April to unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov, dos Anjos has defeated Jason High, Henderson, Nate Diaz and Pettis to claim the belt. The loss to Nurmagomedov had snapped a five-fight winning streak which dos Anjos capped by defeating Donald Cerrone.
"I'm an MMA fighter," dos Anjos said. "I'm a striker. I'm a jiu-jitsu black belt. I'm improving my wrestling. This is such a blessing. I came from the bottom."
Dos Anjos took it to Pettis from the opening ball. He made Pettis back up and took him apart with body kicks, a strong left hand, good grappling and tremendous takedowns. He took Pettis down nine times Saturday in 10 attempts.
He cracked Pettis with a body kick only seconds into the fight, setting a tone for what was to come. He belted Pettis with a straight left hand a short time later, a punch that opened a cut and caused Pettis' eye to swell.
"He caught me with that left hand and I had no peripheral vision," Pettis said.
Pettis coach Duke Roufus urged Pettis to stay off the cage after the first round, and Pettis came out to start the second moving forward. But dos Anjos quickly took him down and beat him up on the ground. He went for a Kimura and nearly got it, but Pettis fought it off. But just as quickly, dos Anjos grabbed his back and was working for a choke.
He fought powerfully and confidently, mixing his attack and keeping Pettis off balance.
After the victory, he was emotional and credited his faith for helping him to the victory.
"I knew I was going to win before this fight happened," dos Anjos said. "I knew that. [God] told me that."
It came as a shock to Pettis, who never could get an attack going. He's been considered one of the sport's rising stars, but dos Anjos was so good he made Pettis look second-rate on this night.
Nurmagomedov meets Cerrone at UFC 187 in May, so the winner will likely wind up rematching dos Anjos for the belt later in the year.
Whoever wins is going to have his hands full if the same dos Anjos who showed up Saturday shows up in his first defense.

Ronda Rousey, the UFC women's bantamweight champion, spent much of 2014 on a movie set filming the screen adaptation of the popular HBO television series, "Entourage." Given that Rousey needed a total of just 82 seconds to win her fights against Sara McMann at UFC 170 (1:06) and Alexis Davis at UFC 175 (0:16), she had plenty of time to work on her acting.
Warner Brothers released a trailer which includes several clips of Rousey, who is in very familiar territory in the scenes in the official trailer.
Rousey plays herself and has a significant role in the movie. Her big scene depicted in the trailer is one at the gym, where the character Turtle, played by Jerry Ferrara, tries to talk her into going out with him.
Rousey was in her training gear for the scene that was filmed at her home gym, the Glendale Fight Club. Her training partners and close friends, Marina Shafir, Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke, appear briefly in the scene as does coach Edmond Tarverdyan.
Turtle approaches Rousey and says, "If I last 30 seconds, you let me take you out on a date."
Rousey beams and quickly makes a counter proposal.
"Last 60 seconds and I'll let you ... " she said.
Just then, a bell rings, leaving the words that Rousey actually spoke to the imagination.
The movie will be released next summer, meaning 2015 is shaping up to be a big year for her. In addition to the movie, she defends her title against No. 1 challenger Cat Zingano on Feb. 28 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In April, the movie "Fast & Furious 7," in which Rousey had a role, will be released, followed several months later by Entourage. In addition, Rousey's book, "My Fight/Your Fight," will be released on May 12.

Conor McGregor guaranteed himself a featherweight title shot and a nice paycheck Sunday with his performance in a one-sided rout of Dennis Siver at TD Garden in Boston.
But when McGregor did a flying leap over the cage and raced toward champion Jose Aldo, seated ringside, making threats and shouting epithets, the passion for and the significance of the upcoming title fight increased monumentally.
It now stands as one of the most hotly anticipated fights of the year, one that will draw a massive crowd and guarantee each of them a massive payday.
McGregor was an 11-1 favorite over Siver, but it was like he was an 11,000-1 favorite. He was completely composed and in control and ruthlessly broke Siver down and tore him apart.
The end came at 1:54 of the second round, shortly after McGregor landed a straight left that sent Siver staggering backward onto the canvas. McGregor mounted him and quickly finished it, forcing referee Herb Dean to wave it off.
Siver was cut, his face full of welts and bumps and looked as if he was mugged by a gang of thieves.
McGregor had boasted before the fight that he'd easily outclass Siver and stop him early. He went out and methodically did just that, raking Siver consistently with straight left hands and hurting him with kicks to the legs and body.
His only shortcoming on this night was in coming up a bit short of a win in just two minutes. But he even had an answer for that.
"I'll tell you, I said two minutes, but I meant two rounds," McGregor said, deadpan, in the cage not long after he'd scored the biggest win of his career.
McGregor turned the featherweight division on its head almost from the moment he made his UFC debut on April 6, 2013, when he blew out Marcus Brimage.
He clearly has a quick wit and the gift of gab and an innate sense for promotion.
He was calling himself the best fighter in the division as soon as he joined it, and it was hard to know what to make of him. But with each successive performance, he showed that he is no joke as a fighter.
That is hardly a prediction he'll defeat Aldo, who not only has won 18 bouts in a row over a more than nine-year span, but stands among the greatest mixed martial arts fighters ever.
McGregor hasn't been in with a big, tough, grinding wrestler, and it remains to be seen how he'd do against that sort of fighter. But Aldo is the consummate striker and isn't going to look to take McGregor down, so stylistically, the bout sets up as an intriguing stand-up battle.
Even former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who has a legitimate claim to the next title shot at Aldo, ahead of McGregor, came away impressed.
Working as an analyst on Fox Sports 1, Edgar said, "McGregor lived up to the hype. He looked phenomenal."
Aldo did his part by the way he handled himself post-fight. Aldo has often come across as a dour and angry man, unapproachable, and always seems to have a chip on his shoulder.
But when McGregor hurled himself over the cage and stood a few feet away, yelling at him like a lunatic, Aldo showed the guts of a burglar. He didn't flinch. He didn't move. He simply stood and smiled.
And while virtually everyone else who had seen McGregor was impressed, Aldo saw things a bit differently.
"That's normal to me," Aldo said. "He's a joker and a court jester to me. All I do is laugh at him."
It will likely be held in May in Las Vegas and figures to have intense interest and a heavy build-up.
McGregor played his win for all it was worth and hurled insults at Aldo once he returned to the cage.
"I'm going to hand him my spit bucket, and then stand back and wait for him to spit shine the belt so it's ready for me to take it," McGregor said.
He'll have to deal with his share of haters because of his outspoken manner. And it's almost certain he'll go into the fight with Aldo as an underdog.
Aldo isn't going to be intimidated and it's going to take a Herculean effort to defeat him.
McGregor, though, proved on Sunday he belongs in the equation as the most deserving choice for Aldo's next challenger.
His critics can run down a list of all the things he hasn't done, but he's won five fights in a row, finishing four, and he's looked increasingly better each time out.
Aldo may shut his mouth for good, and it would be no shock if Aldo won going away.
Aldo is that good; he does that to most men he faces.
But you know what? McGregor is plenty good, too.

It is never easy to suggest that a fighter stops fighting.
With five losses in a row, however, and after 25 UFC fights over a 10-year career, it is looking more likely that Josh Koscheck has fought his last bout for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
[DraftKings: Build your ultimate fantasy MMA team today!.]
?[Josh] Koscheck doesn?t want to retire,? said UFC president Dana White on Saturday after Koscheck?s first-round submission loss to Erick Silva, ?but I?m going to try and push him in that direction.?
Prior to Saturday?s loss to Silva, Koscheck was last seen three weeks prior at UFC 184, where he was submitted in devastating fashion by Jake Ellenberger. Fans were left with a visual of a gurgling, foaming-at-the-mouth Koscheck, fading out of consciousness as he attempted to tap out.
That was his third stoppage loss in a row. Saturday?s loss to Silva marked his fourth. Despite the overwhelming case for the former Division I National Champion out of Edinboro University to hang it up, he isn?t ready to commit to such talk yet.
?Nah, I can?t comment on that right now,? said Koscheck in his post-fight interview with Fox Sports. ?I need to go home. I need to reevaluate life, reevaluate my career ... kind of take some time away. I told Dana, ?I?ll call you in a couple weeks and we?ll figure something out.?
Debuting in 2005 with only two professional fights to his credit, Koscheck fought a who?s who list of former champions, up and comers and contenders while showing fans what a next-generation talent could accomplish, essentially from scratch.
Armed with a looping right hook and a power-double-leg takedown, Koscheck has amassed over four hours of total Octagon time against names like Tyron Woodley, Johny Hendricks, Georges St-Pierre, Diego Sanchez, Robbie Lawler and Matt Hughes.
And now, on the brink of coerced retirement, Koscheck, ever the fighter, is taking the loss to Silva as a building block rather than a brick wall.
?It was fun tonight,? he said. ?Even though I didn?t get the win, I went out there and I fought hard. I see the way I fought this last fight, and the one before it, and I see it as an improvement.?
