Dan Henderson reverses skid, KOs Tim Boetsch in 28 seconds
Dan Henderson might be nearing the end of his legendary mixed martial arts career, but he proved Saturday in a first-round knockout of Tim Boetsch that he's not there yet.
Henderson's famous right hand connected on the button just seconds into their middleweight match Saturday in New Orleans, leading Henderson to a victory in just 28 seconds.
It snapped a two-fight losing streak and reversed a skid in which he entered having lost five of his previous six bouts. He's all but a lock for the pioneer wing of the UFC Hall of Fame and, at 44, many were questioning whether he'd reached the end of the line.
But he looked like the Hendo of old on Saturday. The aggressive Boetsch came forward, as expected, and paid a heavy price. After Henderson landed the straight right, Boetsch wobbled but remained erect. Henderson then caught him with a knee and a blistering right uppercut.
Boetch collapsed along the cage and Henderson pounced, landing several powerful hammerfirsts at the end, forcing referee "Big" John McCarthy to stop it as Boetsch was defenseless.
"I wasn't going to let him off the hook," Henderson said. "I knew I had him hurt. The fight was almost over and I just wanted to make sure it was done."
The win put Henderson back on the familiar side of the ledger and gave him his 24th win in UFC/PRIDE/Strikeforce/World Extreme Cagefighting history, the second most wins by any fighter in those organizations. He trails only former nemesis Wanderlei Silva, who had 27 wins.
Whether Henderson, who will be 45 in August will be around long enough to get the four wins he needs to become No. 1 is debatable. What is not in doubt, though, is his punching power.
Henderson's coaches were confident heading into the fight in part because Boetsch's aggressive, attacking style played into Henderson's strength. And it proved out in the early seconds of the bout.
It felt good for Henderson, who spent much of the fight's build-up fending off questions about retirement.
"It's nice to know that when I say I'm not done and nobody believes me to come out and prove I'm not done yet," he said.
It was a terrific card filled with extraordinary finishes, but at the end of the day, it was Henderson who stole the show, as he has so many times in the past.

Donald Cerrone empathizes with Jon Jones, says it could have been him
LAS VEGAS - Jon Jones and Donald Cerrone have been training partners at Jackson-Winklejohn MMA in Albuquerque New Mexico for almost five years. Both have had their share of individual triumphs and failures inside and outside of the Octagon over the years, but they are currently on opposite ends of the MMA spectrum.
Cerrone is on a seven-fight win streak heading into his fight this Saturday at UFC 187 against John Makdessi. If Cerrone is successful, a lightweight title shot is all but assured. "Cowboy" is riding an unprecedented run of in-ring activity and fans have understandably come along for the ride.
Conversely, Jon Jones is currently suspended by the UFC after his alleged involvement in a felony hit-and-run accident in Albuquerque in April that left a 25-year-old pregnant woman with a broken arm. After hearing the news and citing multiple infractions to their UFC fighter code of conduct, the promotion stripped Jones of its light heavyweight title ? a championship he previously held since 2011 after becoming the company's youngest champion, at just 23.
Speaking with media on Monday at ZUFFA headquarters, Cerrone was sympathetic when asked about his friend.
It makes sense ? after all, anyone who follows Cerrone is well aware of his affinity for all things dangerous.
"OK, so this is my talk on Jon Jones," Cerrone said. "Had the cameras and the spotlight been on me when I was doing all my screwing up, it would've been. ? I would have been in a lot of trouble. People would have been like, 'Oh, God, he's a degenerate. He's an idiot.'
"Jon is just young. He's got a lot of money and making the mistakes. Sure, he should he have hired a driver, absolutely. But he didn't and now he's in the public eye and it's tough."
Cerrone recalls a recent trip to Whole Foods as a testament to his improved patience and maturity.
As Cerrone tells it, he was walking through a crosswalk with his fiance, Lindsay. Admittedly, he was texting on the phone and not paying much attention, and apparently he upset a driver, who then laid on his horn.
"Do you know that guy?" Lindsay asked.
"Nah, I don't know that guy at all," replied Cerrone, as they resumed their walk.
When they arrived at their car, the man was waiting, visibly fired up. He began yelling expletives at Cerrone and proceeds to punch him in the mouth, knocking the sunglasses off his head.
"I was [expletive] livid ? seeing fire in my eyes," he recalls. "I look at Lindsay?but now, where I'm at, I just bit the bullet."
Cerrone references a prior misdemeanor assault charge in a 'boat rage' incident in 2013 ? he was found not guilty ? and other prior run-ins, as being the catalyst for his change. With age comes wisdom, and apparently that credo might finally be taking hold with the UFC superstar.
"I told the dude, 'You know, this is your lucky day.' He says, 'Oh yeah! I bet it's my [expletive] lucky day!' I was like, 'Dude, if you touch me again, I can't control it. I'm gonna bite this bullet and I'm gonna drive away.'
"We got in the car and left."
Cerrone admits that if the incident happened even just a few years ago, the outcome would have been vastly different. And that's where Cerrone connects with Jon Jones ? temptation, in any form, is a daily struggle. It's inescapable.
However, Cerrone believes in his teammate. He believes in Jon Jones. And if Jones can learn anything from Cerrone's rough and tumble rise to MMA superstardom, it's how to learn from the mistakes you've made.
"I've definitely made bad decisions," Cerrone said. "He's gonna bounce back."

Ronda Rousey promises 'comeuppance' after Bethe Correia's suicide joke
Brazilian bantamweight Bethe Correia caused quite a stir Tuesday when she said that she hopes Ronda Rousey doesn?t ?kill herself? after their UFC 190 title tilt on Aug. 1.
That comment, alone, could be looked at as a bit of a promotional snafu, even without any prior context. However, when you take into account that Rousey?s father killed himself when she was just 8, then the barb takes on a whole new level of disrespect.
Many wondered if Rousey would even take the time to address the comment. It was undoubtedly in very poor taste, and no one would have held it against her if she just let the comment fall to the wayside.
Then again, that isn?t Ronda Rousey?s style.
Earlier today, Rousey took to social media to address Correia?s shortsighted comments.
@bethecorreia suicide is no joke or selling point. My father will be with me the day I hand you the comeuppance you deserve.
? Ronda Rousey (@RondaRousey) May 28, 2015
It didn?t take long for Correia to issue a very formal, and very public apology.
@RondaRousey Never knew what happened to ur dad.I'm humble enough to ask u for forgiveness. Family is a godly bless to me. See u in #UFC190
? Bethe (@bethecorreia) May 28, 2015
The issue with Correia?s apology is that it comes after the challenger already made more than a few, personal references to Rousey?s autobiography ?My Fight/Your Fight.? She trounced Rousey in the press with comments about her past drug use, mental stability and even went as far as to bring Rousey?s mother into the mix.
So, as seemingly heartfelt as Correia?s apology is, the thought of her not being aware of Rousey?s past trauma in dealing with her Dad?s suicide is unlikely.
What?s the verdict, Cagereaders? Do you believe Correia? Does it even matter at this point?

Dana White: Ronda Rousey vs. 'Cyborg' fight would sell 2 million PPVs
Dana White is the president of the UFC and he is, by definition, a fight promoter. And while appearing on Jim Rome's show on Wednesday to promote UFC 187, White was doing what he does best.
White and Rome were discussing the topics du jour on the show when Ronda Rousey's name came up. The promotion, to no fault of its own, has been unable to find suitable competition for Rousey during her historic tear. However, one name that has consistently been linked to ?Rowdy? ever since her UFC debut is Cristiane ?Cyborg? Justino.
Justino famously sent former women?s MMA star Gina Carano into retirement in 2009. She is widely regarded as the best female fighter not named Ronda Rousey, and she has been on an endless campaign in her attempt to secure a match with the 28-year-old UFC champ.
Both White and Rousey want the fight. Currently, Justino is signed to the all-women?s promotion, Invicta, with the UFC footing the bill. It is assumed that if Justino can make the bantamweight limit 135 pounds (she has fought the majority of her career at 145 pounds), then the fight will most assuredly happen.
And when it does, Dana White ? ever the promoter ? claims it will be massive.
Like, biggest MMA event of all-time massive.
?I?ll tell you this, Jim,? White said, ?when that fight happens, I guarantee you that thing does over two million pay-per-view buys. It will be massive.?
Rome quickly asked what everyone else was thinking at that moment: Seriously, two million?
?Yeah, definitely. Definitely.?
Even for a charismatic promoter who has been known to dance with hyperbole, the statement comes as a bit of a shock.
The biggest pay-per-view the UFC has ever done was UFC 100 in 2009. The card featured MMA superstars Georges St-Pierre and Brock Lesnar defending their respective titles, along with a feature bout between popular stars Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson. That anniversary card was stacked with the biggest names the company had to offer, and it came during the MMA ?boom? years of 2006-2010.
The show did a reported 1.6 million PPV buys.
So, White proclaiming a championship bout between two women would be the biggest fight in the history of the sport is quite the stretch. For one, Rousey is so dominant that her opponents have a hard time making it out of the first round. And Cyborg is a far cry from being considered a household name. Then again, as White tells it, there has never been an athlete as polarizing, with the willingness and ability to sell a fight, as Rousey.
?The more rich and famous she becomes, the easier she is to work with,? White said. ?[And] It?s always the other way around. I can?t explain it.
?She?s laser-focused on her career and what she wants to do. None of these guys wanna do PR?she?ll do any PR you ask her to do. She?ll even do PR to try and help someone else?s fight.
He continued, ?She turns nothing down. And she always says, 'I?ll fight on a week?s notice if they call me' ? and she means it. She?s the greatest athlete I?ve ever worked with. Period. I wish I had 10 Ronda Rouseys.?
Rousey can be seen this summer in the Hollywood blockbusters ?Fast 7? and ?Entourage.? Her new book ?My Fight/Your Fight? hit shelves last week to critical acclaim. And in a few short months, Rousey will defend her title against Brazilian Bethe Correia on Aug. 1 in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 190.
She is, without a doubt, one of the biggest stars in the sport. But two million PPV buys, big?

UFC restructures its Hall of Fame, creates four distinct wings for induction
The UFC announced Tuesday that it will dramatically overhaul its Hall of Fame, creating four new categories for inductees and definining criteria for selection. Previously, the members were chosen almost exclusively by UFC president Dana White.
The new categories for inductees are:
? Modern era wing: All fighters who made their pro debut after Nov. 17, 2000, and UFC 28, when the unified rules were first implemented, are eligible for selection in this class.
? Pioneer era wing: This category will honor fighters who debuted prior to UFC 28 or Nov. 17, 2000.
? Contributors wing: This category will honor anyone or any group that has made a significant contribution to the sport beyond fighting. It will consider, for example, referees, judges, trainers, commissioners, announcers and promoters. So, people such as Greg Jackson, the elite trainer at Jackson's MMA; announcer Joe Rogan and/or referee "Big" John McCarthy would be eligible for selection in this category.
? Fight wing: The UFC wants to honor the greatest fights in the sport's era and have them recorded for posterity. So fights like the Mauricio "Shogun" Rua-Dan Henderson I bout at UFC 139 in 2011 would be eligible here.
"The UFC Hall of Fame has an important job," UFC president Dana White said in a statement. "It not only celebrates greatness, but it helps pass stories of the greatest athletes and fights in UFC history on to the next generation of fight fans. We're looking forward to announcing the Class of 2015 and what is going to be a great induction event on July 11."
The 12 people already in the Hall of Fame will be divided into one of these categories.
Forrest Griffin is the only modern era inductee, having been inducted in 2013. Pioneer inductees are Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, Tito Ortiz and Pat Miletich. The only fight in so far is Griffin-Stephan Bonnar I from 2005. Promoter/businessman Charles "Mask" Lewis is in the contributor's wing.
Fighters in the modern category must be 35 or older or have been retired for one calendar year. Active fighters are eligible if over 35 but not preferred.
In the pioneer category, fighters must be 35 or older and retired for one calendar year. Their accomplishments outside of the UFC will be taken into consideration, but more weight will be given to UFC accomplishments because it is a UFC Hall of Fame and not a general MMA Hall of Fame.
For a fight to be inducted, it must have taken place five years before the year of induction. So Henderson-Rua I wouldn't be eligible until 2016.
White will lead a committee of UFC employees in the selection process.

The deal, which pays fighters anywhere from $2,500-$40,000 depending on championship status and tenure, will see Reebok serve as the official uniform for athletes competing inside the Octagon. Along with it, fighters won't be able to wear previously acquired sponsor logos in the cage.
Fans, fighters and pundits have all criticized the UFC and Reebok for what many perceive as just another way for the companies to make money ? while the athletes get the raw end of the deal.
The UFC says otherwise. They say the rumored $70-plus million dollars that Reebok is giving them will go straight to the fighters. In the process, the UFC gets a sleek, clean uniform that falls in line with most leagues in professional sports.
Heavyweight Brendan Schaubtook to Twitter to voice his displeasure while addressing a fan that asked about the Reebok deal.
I've made six figures in sponsorship in each of my last 6 fights ? https://t.co/gotToaSDJh
? Brendan Schaub (@BrendanSchaub) May 6, 2015
UFC President Dana White went on TSN?s ?Off the Record? on Friday and responded directly to Brendan Schaub and his claims of a six-figure sponsor payday.
?I?m sure this guy is making $100,000 a fight,? White said, not masking his sarcasm. White then rattled off a list of fringe sponsors that recently sponsored Schaub: KeepItPlayful.com, Box?n Burn Gym, Alchemist Management and NOHO Hangover.
White continued on about the deal and quickly shot down any talk about the partnership being anything other than a great opportunity for everyone involved, "No, I don't think we're screwing our athletes on the Reebok deal," he said. "Any time we make any type of change here, people go crazy in this sport.
?I just don't know how the deal could be any better. Could there be a lot more money? Of course there could; everybody wants more money. That's never going to change no matter what. If this deal with Reebok was $200 million it wouldn't be enough money."
UFC announcer Joe Rogan is mutual friends with both Schaub and White. On Saturday, Schaub appeared on Rogan?s podcast to address White?s comments on Off the Record. Schaub began by admitting that the whole situation has been weighing heavily on his shoulders, ?It?s actually been keeping me up [at night],? admitted Schaub.
?I?m not lying. But It does nothing for me to prove this, because first thing?s first: I?m Team UFC, man. I wouldn?t have this platform and I wouldn?t have this fame and I wouldn?t be making the money I am now if it wasn?t for Dana White and the UFC. So I?m not anti-UFC in the least bit.?
Schaub continued, and began recalling a story he had with his father. Schaub said that he relies on family and friends when challenges present themselves and the issue with White has him vexed. His dad posed the question: What if the deal is for the greater good? What if other fighters, who perhaps in prior years were less fortunate, were able to make more due to the new deal?
It was that frame of reference that put everything into perspective for Schaub.
?I don?t know the overall plan of this Reebok deal. So, if it helps the majority of fighters, I?m on board, man.?
No matter your opinion on the UFC/Reebok marriage ? and there have been plenty ? the sponsorship deal does not officially begin until UFC 189 on July 11. So, until the paychecks start rolling in and a decent sample size can be evaluated, emotions will continue to run high, and questions will remain. As for Schaub and his contemporaries, let?s hope his dad was right.

Ronda Rousey lands Sports Illustrated cover, labeled 'World's Most Dominant Athlete'
There have been plenty of titles used to describe Ronda Rousey, but few carry as much weight as this: World?s Most Dominant Athlete.
The cover of the May 13 issue of Sports Illustrated features Rousey and her signature no-frills glare. Rousey was part of the S.I. swimsuit issue in late-2014; however, this honor highlights her accomplishments inside the cage.
Rousey is the second MMA fighter in the sport's history to grace the cover of the magazine ? lightweight contender Roger Huerta was the first, in 2007. But Huerta?s cover was an impromptu action shot, with an accompanying story about the rise of the sport; this cover is all about Ronda Rousey and her utter dominance.
In a year filled with record-breaking performances and a meteoric rise to pop culture superstardom, Rousey is enjoying unprecedented levels of success in 2015.
Inside the cage, ?Rowdy? has had a year for the record books. After a 16-second annihilation of Alexis Davis last July, she upped the ante with a 14-second whirlwind finish via her signature arm-bar over Cat Zingano at UFC 184 in February. Rousey talks about the Zingano finish in her SI cover story, ??I?m dropping all modesty here,? she said to the magazine. ?That?s the most brilliant [expletive] ninja [expletive] I ever saw. Every single millisecond of that fight was something that has never been done before in MMA.?
As if having your last two fights end in 30 seconds wasn?t enough, Rousey is starring in summer blockbusters ?Fast 7? and ?Entourage.? Never one to have her momentum stall out, Rousey?s memoir ?My Fight/Your Fight? was released Tuesday in bookstores nationwide.
The 28-year-old media darling decided to dabble in some pro wrestling in 2015, too, making an in-ring cameo with her ?Fast 7? co-star Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson at Wrestlemania 32 back in April.
Now, with Tuesday?s SI cover announcement, Rousey?s stock has never been higher. For her next feat, Rousey aims to stay undefeated when she meets Brazilian Bethe Correia at UFC 190 on Aug. 1 in Rio de Janeiro.
If Rousey can handle business against Correia in the same signature fashion as fans have grown accustomed to, then Sports Illustrated and everybody else better start thinking of some new words in 2016 ? because we aren?t sure ?Dominant? and the accompanying adjectives are going to be enough.
