Darren Elkins nearly missed the call for his UFC on Fox 7 bout because of cell phone charges
For Americans visiting Canada, the cell phone charges can sometimes creep up on you. Your phone will work the same, but weeks later, you get a shocking cell phone bill. UFC featherweight Darren Elkins wasn't going to get hit with that massive phone bill during his trip to Montreal for UFC 158. He ignored phone calls.
[Also: Video blog shows the other side of UFC's Dana White]
Of course, that also meant he nearly missed his chance at filling in at UFC on Fox 7 after Clay Guida pulled out of his bout with Chad Mendes because of an injury.
"Up there (in Canada) I had my phone turned off," Elkins today told MMAjunkie.com Radio "You've got those ridiculous roaming charges and stuff."
His manager ran him down and broke the news of the potential fight. Elkins will face Mendes, the one-time featherweight contender, just a month after fighting Antonio Carvalho and winning with a controversial TKO. Elkins is on a five-fight win streak, so a win over Mendes could push him closer to a title shot.
It's the kind of fight that's definitely worth the roaming charges.

Jose Aldo-Anthony Pettis featherweight championship fight back on
Over the weekend, UFC president Dana White said featherweight champion Jose Aldo was refusing to take a fight with Anthony Pettis, the lightweight who was scheduled to fight Aldo in August. As Kevin Iole wrote, Aldo told White he didn't think Pettis had earned the title shot.
The fight is back on. Andre Pederneias, Aldo's manager, told SporTV in Brazil (with translation from our friends at Yahoo! Brazil) that Aldo will take the fight, with one condition:
?I had a meeting today (Monday) with Jos Aldo, who said: ?I?m going to end with this clownery. People are saying that I?m running, so they are going to see who will run from who when the time comes. If you enjoy a brawl, you can buy the pay-per-view on August 3 and that's what you are going to watch because heads will roll?. At that moment I called Dana White to agree with the fight, but on one condition: after that fight, the winner gets a title shot at [lightweight]?.
White confirmed that the fight is on.
Yes Aldo vs Pettis and it's for Aldo's UFC 145lb title
? Dana White (@danawhite) February 26, 2013
ESPN is reporting that Aldo will get his wish, and that if he beats Pettis on Aug. 3, he will get a shot at the UFC lightweight belt. Benson Henderson is currently the title holder, and will fight Gilbert Melendez in April.
This means the UFC lightweight belt has a clear path for 2013. Pettis was supposed to be the next lightweight contender, but pushed for the Aldo fight because he didn't want to wait until the Henderson and Melendez fight was over.
Are you looking forward to seeing Aldo possibly fight for the lightweight belt? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

UFC 158: Georges St-Pierre keeps belt, Johny Hendricks wins impressively, and more
UFC 158 in Montreal featured a huge knockout, a disappointing if unsurprising title bout, and a few snoozers on the main card. Complete results:
Georges St-Pierre def. Nick Diaz via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45): After Diaz asked for the fight with GSP for years, he came out flat against the champion. Diaz couldn't stop GSP's takedowns, and was controlled for the entire bout. When they were on their feet, GSP landed jabs at will. Diaz never found his rhythm.
Johny Hendricks def. Carlos Condit via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28): Hendricks knew he had to get an exciting win to not just beat Condit, but to impress the UFC enough to get a title shot. He did it with a thrilling, back and forth fight that had Hendricks throw everything but the kitchen sink at Condit, who somehow withstood all the striking. Hendricks also used takedowns to neutralize Condit.
After the fight, Hendricks asked for a title shot against George St-Pierre. He even offered to fly to GSP's house and hire a ref for their bout. It's Hendricks' sixth win in a row. The fight was also good enough to win $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for each fighter.
Jake Ellenberger def. Nate Marquardt via KO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:00: This fight helped make UFC 158 its pay-per-view price. Ellenberger moved in as Marquardt tried to throw a kick, and Ellenberger landed a big left-right combo that sent Marquardt to the ground. He then followed up on the ground until the fight was stopped. Though Marquardt protested the stoppage, replays showed he was out face-first on the canvas. The knockout earned Ellenberger a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.
Chris Camozzi def. Nick Ring via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28): As you tuned into this fight, did you wonder why it was put on the pay-per-view? You're not alone. They both had trouble getting after each other enough to land strikes.
Mike Ricci def. Colin Fletcher via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27): The two "The Ultimate Fighter" runners-up put on a fight that didn't exactly create excitement for fighters found on the reality show. They both dragged each other down and didn't create much offense.
Patrick Cote def. Bobby Voelker via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28): Cote started strong on the way to his close win over Strikeforce product Voelker, but had trouble defending Voelker's takedowns and strikes late in the fight.
Darren Elkins def. Antonio Carvalho via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 3:06: This is one of those fights that will cause MMA fans to shake their heads. Elkins weakened Carvalho with a left hook, but after Carvalho stummbled, refereee Yves Levigne stopped the fight. Carvalho protested, but there was nothing that could be done.
Jordan Mein def. Dan Miller via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 4:42: Count Jordan Mein as one of the Strikeforce fighters who has made a big, exciting debut in the UFC. After nearly getting caught in an armbar, he knocked out Miller, who had previously never been knocked out.
John Makdessi def. Daron Cruickshank via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28): Makdessi took a tight but fun bout over Cruickshank, who started the fight well by landing several leg kicks. But Makdessi came back in the later rounds with his patented spinning kicks. Cruickshank returned the favor with plenty of big kicks, and the fight easily could have gone in either direction.
Rick Story def. Quinn Mulhern via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:05: Story gave Strikeforce product Mulhern a rude welcome to the UFC. Story took advantage of Mulhern by knocking him to the canvas and following with strikes until the fight was stopped.
T.J. Dillashaw def. Issei Tamura via KO (strikes) - Round 2, 0:26: In the second round, Dillashaw landed a huge knee and dropped Tamura. He followed up with strikes until the fight was stopped.
George Roop def. Reuben Duran via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

?The Korean Zombie,? Boston and Tito Ortiz: Where did they fall on the Cagewriter Hot or Not list?
It's been a slow week for MMA, but it's likely to pick up as we start an eventful April. In this last week of March, who was hot or who was not?
Hot ? Boston: According to a tweet from UFC president Dana White, the promotion is headed back to Boston, his hometown. Fox's new channel, Fox Sports 1, will get its first UFC event with this card, scheduled for Aug. 17.
Not ? Commissions: First, Nick Diaz's camp said his weigh-in at UFC 158 was mishandled by the commission in Quebec. Then, Andrei Arlovski's camp said there was a timing error at the World Series of Fighting 2 card that caused Arlovski to take extra damage. Commissions' doing things right is necessary for the sport to grow, so mistakes like these are worrisome.
Hot ? Chan Sung Jung, aka "The Korean Zombie:" He stood up to the UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre with a respectful dignity. Jung informed GSP, and much of the MMA world, about the symbolism behind the Rising Sun that the welterweight champion wore on his gi for UFC 158. GSP and Hayabusa, the company behind the gi quickly apologized. Jung handled the situation with quiet courage, and used it as a teachable moment. It was an impressive moment for both TKZ and GSP.
Not ? Tito Ortiz: The retired UFC legend is now working as the manager for Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, and he has a plan. Santos is fighting on next weekend's Invicta card, and he wants her to fight her next few fights in Invicta. Then on New Year's Eve, Ortiz wants Santos, who won't move down to bantamweight, to fight UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in the UFC.
"Cris has shown in Strikeforce, why she's so dominant, why women are afraid of her. She has three fights with Invicta, she will be the world champion and she will walk away a world champion. Like I said, New Year's Eve, let's make a super fight. Forget the title. Champion vs. champion, who cares about the title?"
That's a nice plan if you forget that Rousey has said she doesn't want to move up in weight, or that most of her 2013 is set. She will coach against the winner of Cat Zingano and Miesha Tate in the next edition of "The Ultimate Fighter."
Hot ? Fans: You're getting another Fan Expo. The UFC will host a Fan Expo in conjunction with UFC 162 in Las Vegas. Get your tickets here.

Chael Sonnen shows off his poetic side in explaining fight with Jon Jones (Video)
Natasha Tretheway is the poet laureate of the United States, but she might be nervous about keeping her job after seeing this performance by UFC fighter Chael Sonnen. He spun a whole poem on how his fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones came to be. Now, this might all be fictional, but it is entertaining.
During this season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Sonnen has shown himself to be more of a coach who has opened up with his athletes. There has been less Sonnen shtick, and more Coach Chael. But it's nice to know that Sonnen can still turn it on when he needs to.

How dedicated are MMA fans? Check out how one couple incorporated it into their wedding
When Rebecca Dodell and Fernando Albiar started dating, she wasn't much of an MMA fan. But she fell for the sport as their relationship grew more serious. Now, she attends UFC events and cheers on fighters with her fiance. The pair was in attendance at UFC 157 in Anaheim.

Bollywood actor, Super Fight League co-founder Sanjay Dutt, headed to prison
Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, the co-founder of the Super Fight League, the largest active mixed martial arts promotion in India, was ordered Thursday by India's Supreme Courtto serve the remainder of a six-year sentence on gun charges stemming from a 1993 bombing in Mumbai that killed 257 people.
Dutt, 53, was originally convicted in 2007 under India's Terrorism and Disruptive Activities Act of possessing a rifle and a pistol given to him by the men convicted in the 1993 bombing that occurred in the financial district of Mumbai (then known as Bombay). In addition to the 257 people who died in the bombing, more than 700 were injured.
He was released on bail pending an appeal, but the Supreme Court upheld his conviction Thursday.
Dutt is a popular Bollywood actor who founded the Super Fight League last year. The promotion signed a five-year television deal with ESPN Star Sports, but it turns out that Dutt will be in prison for most of the term of that deal. Dutt has already served 18 months, but must serve an additional 4 1/2 years.
Dutt is the co-founder and the chairman of the Super Fight League. According to his biography on the Super Fight League web site, Dutt is India's "real action hero."
Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt needs no introduction, he is the co-founder and partner of Raj Kundra in Super Fight Promotions Pvt. Ltd. He is the face of MMA India and India's real action hero! He has the raw appeal he has that is so essential to being a star, and people can feel his presence even before they've sighted him. He is the real action hero of India! Sanjay Dutt's passion for fitness and fighting sports along with a vision for India's MMA future he has joined forces with Raj to Launch India's first professional Mixed Martial Arts league. Mr. Dutt is also the brand ambassador for the Boxing Federation of India.
The UFC has been attempting to break into India, but CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said Indians were just becoming aware of MMA. Feeder leagues like the Super Fight League would have been important for the UFC's efforts, to help build interest in the sport in the world's second-most populated country.
The Super Fight League has several recognizable fighters, including former UFC fighters Jeff Monson, Trevor Prangley and Neal Grove.
It has a show scheduled for March 29, but it is not clear if that show will go on.

Quick Wife Issue - What should I do?

Rashad Evans: ? I feel a duty to say I support gay marriage and gay rights.?
Rashad Evans, the one-time UFC light heavyweight champion, made his position on same-sex marriage clear. He's for it, because equality in the world makes it better for everyone.
When asked by Outsports of his thoughts on the issue, Evans issued this incredibly smart, well-thought-out response. His statement in full:
?I've never been a homophobe, never understood what that is all about. I knew some people who were gay and never cared about their sexuality. But at the same time, I didn't fully understand the issues around gay people until my friend BA started telling me about his full public support for gay marriage. We talked about the issue and I decided its not enough to not be against a minority, if you want things to go better for them you have to speak up with them.
?I'm a UFC fighter, a macho-type sport. I am a heterosexual guy in a tough macho sport, which is exactly the reason I feel a duty to say I support gay marriage and gay rights.
?I have nothing to gain personally from supporting this issue, and that's the point. Society as a whole is better when there is equality, and I want to live in a country where everyone has the same rights because we all benefit from that.
?What people overlook is that is isn't a sex issue, its a love issue. There's no justifiable reason for trying to get in the way of two people who love each other.
?I have kids. I don't want them growing up in a society where they, or their friends, could be second class citizens based on which person they fall in love with or who they want to be happy with.?
As he pointed out, the MMA world can be a macho place where instances of homphobia are overlooked. The sport has improved, as Liz Carmouche became the first gay fighter in the UFC when she fought Ronda Rousey at UFC 157. The same weekend Carmouche fought, UFC president Dana White said he would welcome a gay male fighter, and would deal with any fighter who would have a problem with it.
But well-known former champion standing up for marriage equality shows that the MMA world is one that can be welcoming and supportive.

Georges St-Pierre?s camp says he beat Nick Diaz with an injured Achilles tendon
The UFC gave a backstage look at Georges St-Pierre's win over Nick Diaz at UFC 158, complete with an adorable shot at the end of GSP high-fiving a young fan who was dressed like the champ from head to toe.
According the GSP's trainer, Firas Zahabi, it's a fight the UFC welterweight champion went through with despite an injury. Zahabi said GSP injured his Achilles tendon during training for the fight, and it may have worsened during the bout.
"I was worried it would tear during the fight," Zahabi told MMAFighting.com. "We had to cut his last sparring [session] short due to his injury. He had a week to rest it and then the fight."
Does finding out that GSP was injured changed your opinion of his performance? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche worked harder to prove themselves, teaching me to do the same
?Women always have to work harder to prove themselves.?
When Liz Carmouche said this at the UFC 157 open workouts on Wednesday, I couldn?t help but smile. Carmouche served in the Marines, is a lesbian, and is now a fighter in the UFC. She understands like few others that a woman?s work of proving herself is never done.
UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey gets this, too. She had to work harder than few other fighters in UFC history in not just preparing for her fight but in selling it. During the run-up to her main event bout with Carmouche, the first ever UFC women?s fight, Rousey trained three times a day and was interviewed by everyone from Time Magazine to Larry King. Camera crews for the UFC?s ?Primetime? and ?Countdown? shows, as well as HBO's ?Real Sports,? followed her. Rousey joked after she won the fight with a first-round armbar that she wants a week off from talking about herself.
As a woman working in the male-dominated world of covering sports, I know this, too. I?ve been covering MMA for six years, five for Yahoo! Sports. But I am still questioned, dismissed and sometimes even attacked because I dare cover a ?man?s sport.? Whenever I am confronted with sexism, whether subtle or vulgar, I have to take a deep breath and consider my response. As a woman, I have to work harder to prove myself, and remember one slip of the tongue can wreck it for me and other women who want to cover MMA.
UFC president Dana White complimented Rousey and Carmouche for dealing with so much media attention like professionals, and said he wished every fighter would be such a pro. But there?s something as a man that White could never understand about the work Carmouche and Rousey put into their preparation for the bout.
They had to work like professionals and show up and be engaging at every single press appearance. Women have to work harder to prove themselves, and the last thing female fighters need is a reputation for being difficult with the media. Their hard work paid off, as they brought more attention to this fight than anyone ? even White ? ever expected.
But their ability to handle all of the attention, both negative and positive, taught me something, too. Rousey and Carmouche showed me exactly how to act when confronted by those who question us because of our gender. They didn?t worry about what doubters or misogynists or homophobes had to say. They worried about working harder to prove themselves.
When Rousey escaped Carmouche?s neck crank, the Honda Center became the noisiest building I had ever stepped foot in. The 15,525 fans stood and cheered at the top of their lungs for two women. Women had arrived in the UFC, and Carmouche and Rousey showed what two women who worked harder to prove themselves could accomplish.
Thank you, Ronda and Liz. Thank you for finally busting through that glass ceiling. Thank you for showing young women that they can do any sport ? even ones that involve bruised faces and busted teeth. Thank you for working harder to prove yourselves, and reminding me to do the same.
