Well-known MMA referee Josh Rosenthal has been a part of some of the UFC's most famous bouts, including Brock Lesnar's championship win over Shane Carwin and Dan Henderson's Fight of the Year win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Now, it turns out he was also part of an illegal drug operation.
In a story that could have been the plot of the show "Weeds," Rosenthal plead guilty to charges of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana. He and an associate owned a warehouse that kept 1,356 marijuana plants with a street value of $6 million. According to MMA Junkie, he could spend more than three years in prison:
The government is recommending 37 months in jail, fines and five years of probation, during which he would be subject to random searches, according to the agreement. Without a deal, he faced 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine and a minimum of five years' probation.
The court will ultimately decide Rosenthal's fate. He is scheduled to appear on May 17.
Rosenthal was once a mainstay on the UFC refereeing rotation, but hasn't been in the cage recently. His license lapsed in California as he dealt with his legal troubles and healed from a staph infection. Though referees are assigned by state commissions, not the UFC, Rosenthal had earned the praise of UFC president Dana White for his role in the Lesnar-Carwin bout.

At UFC on Fox 7, Chad Mendes knocked out Darren Elkins in 1:08. Joseph Benavidez finished off a blistering performance against Darren Uyenoyama with a TKO ate the end of the second round. T.J. Dillashaw won with a TKO over Hugo Viana in the first round.
What do these fighters have in common? They all fight for Team Alpha Male, the camp headed by UFC veteran and former WEC champ Urijah Faber. Throw in that Faber has two submission wins in two months, and 2013 has been very good to the Team Alpha Males.
But what is it that has pushed these men to such a win streak? Take a look in their corner. The newest addition is UFC veteran Duane Ludwig, who is recovering from a knee injury and a tough, three-loss run in the UFC. He started with Team Alpha Male early this year, and has clearly made a difference.
Dillashaw said Ludwig's role of head trainer has helped develop the talent that was already in their camp.
"I believe we had the talent already in our gym ? we had all the talent in the world," Dillashaw told MMAjunkie.com. "(Ludwig) just came in and kind of perfected it. He changed some small things and is just kind of staying on us."
Team Alpha Male has long had a reputation for taking wrestlers and turning them into fighters. Mendes, Faber and Dillashaw were all Division I wrestlers for California schools. Benavidez wrestled in high school and for a year in college. Under Faber's tutelage, this band of fighters were good enough to earn title shots, but they didn't fare well in those fights.
At UFC 149, Faber lost to Renan Barao in an interim men's bantamweight title fight. Jose Aldo knocked out Chad Mendes when they fought for the featherweight title at UFC 142. Benavidez has dropped a title bout at bantamweight and most recently, against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 152 at flyweight.
Ludwig's next task will be helping his fighters come up with a way to win those title fights. Mendes has had three, first-round knockout wins since losing to Aldo and is back in the title picture. Benavidez's two wins since losing to Johnson have him on the path back to another title shot.
Will Ludwig help his fighters get that elusive belt? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Fans get unbelievable access to fighters at UFC events. During breaks between fights, fighters will walk around and take pictures and give autographs to whoever asks them. But sometimes that access can lead to problems, like when a fan takes a swing at a fighter.
At "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Saturday, a Brazilian fan called Chael Sonnen over to the stands, and then threw a punch that didn't land. A security guard stepped in and dragged the fan away.
[Also: Daniel Cormier noncommital about future following Frank Mir]
Sonnen took the incident in stride.
"It was very quick, like those things typically happen," Sonnen told MMAjunkie.com. "I was visiting with some fans, and a gentleman had started in on me. Ultimately, that's what it led to.
"I think a fan can do anything they want. I think they can heckle, a fan can boo, but they can't touch you. But the same thing goes for me. I can yell at a fan too, but you can't touch them. If you want to be a fan, you buy the ticket, and you can have any energy you want, whether it's positive or negative. And in this case it was negative, and he went a little too far."
A little tip for fans -- don't try to hit fighters. Don't hit anyone, really, but you definitely should not hit a professional fighter. Even if you don't think much of his fighting skill, he's still among the best fighters in the world. At best, you'll look like a fool. At worst? You'll end up knocked out.

Fallon Fox, the postoperative trans fighter who is looking to continue her MMA career, has been cleared of any wrongdoing in getting a fighter's license in Florida.
The question asked by the Florida commission was whether Fox, who fought in Florida in March, had obtained a license fraudulently. She was given her license in Florida after saying she had a license in California. She was given a receipt for her application in California, and thought that was a license. Now, Florida has cleared her, opening the door for her to apply for another license there.
And it appears she will need one. Allanna Jones has agreed to a match-up with Fox for May 24 bout with Championship Fighting Alliance.

"It was a very weird night."
UFC president Dana White started the post-UFC 159 press conference with these words. The event featured a nasty broken thumb on Yancy Medeiros, and equally nasty broken toe on Jon Jones, two fight stoppages because of eyepokes, and one fight that was canceled hours before it was supposed to happen.
But the craziest part of all? The demonic voice that was heard between rounds of Michael Bisping's win over Alan Belcher.
Did the gates of hell open before the fight, and did Satan send his minions to New Jersey? Were Bisping's cornermen, who were bathed in creepy red light, actually demons? Middle Easy thinks it was a spell from "Passages of the Dead."
It's possible the UFC ticked off the wrong person and got the evil eye thrown its way. The bigger question: Are we all cursed for watching the bouts?

It was a bizarre and sad week in the world, and the sad events are still going. My heart goes out to people dealing with the tragic events in Boston and West, Texas, and those who are cleaning up from the massive storm that hit Chicagoland.
In trying times, sports can give us something to talk about that doesn't involve bombs and explosions and death tolls. If you don't want a diversion, no one will blame you, but if you do, the hot or not list from the week in MMA.
Hot -- Science: UFC president Dana White has been battling with Meniere's Disease, a disorder of the inner-ear that has wreaked havoc on his health. A surgery that was supposed to help didn't, but White tried a new therapy that he says has made a huge difference. White went to Germany and received platement-rich plasma therapy, after New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez told him to, of course.
Not -- Fans who take swings at fighters: OK, it was just one fan, but it was one fan too many. Taking a swing at Chael Sonnen or anyone else is the kind of thing that could raise security levels hinder the access fans have to their favorite fighters.
Hot -- Jon Jones: Though he made a bad move when he accused, then withdrew his accusations, Sonnen of taking steroids, Jones is still having a good week. His Nike line is on sale, making him the first UFC fighter with his own shoe.
Not -- Josh Rosenthal: The well-respected MMA referee had a bad week that probably could have been worse. After he was busted for conspiracy charges because he owned a warehouse full of marijuana plants, Rosenthal plead guilty and faces 37 months in jail.
Still taking temperature -- Benson Henderson: The UFC lightweight champ will defend his belt against Gilbert Melendez on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 7. We will find out if he's still the hottest in his division.

Pat Miletich has a diverse resume. He was a fighter, earning the UFC welterweight championship in 1998. He is one of mixed martial arts' most prolific trainers, having trained fighters like Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver and Robbie Lawler at one time in their careers. He's a commentator, voicing MMA fights for Showtime and AXSTV with knowledge that makes him one of the best at the job. Now he's considering adding politician to that list.
A longtime Iowan, Miletich is considering running for the Senate seat opening in Iowa as Tom Harkin is planning to step down.
"A lot of people are fed up with a lot of things that are happening in the country,? he said to the Quad City Times. If he runs, it will be as a Republican or independent.
But winning the seat won't be easy. Several experienced politicians are interested in running for Senate. Fighters haven't done well in political races in the past. Check out who was burning up and who was chilling out in this week's hot or not list.
Hot -- "The Ultimate Fighter:" It's been a long road for the reality show that helped launch the UFC into the company it is today. Until this season, there hadn't been many memorable moments or fighters in year, but an updated show changed that.
Not -- Matt Mitrione: You think he'd be on the hot list after his fast knockout win last weekend, but his mouth has pushed him to the not list. Mitrione went on the MMA Hour on Monday and ripped trans fighter Fallon Fox as a "sociopath" and "freak," which led to Mitrione's suspension.
Hot -- Conor McGregor: After winning over Marcus Brimage at UFC on Fuel 9 last weekend with a Knockout of the Night win, McGregor didn't have to pick up another welfare check. Though his lobbying for a fight at UFC 159 didn't work because of injuries to both Joe Proctor and Al Iaquinta, he still made quite the jump into MMA's zeitgeist this week.
Hot -- UFC code of conduct: The UFC said that they were introducing their code of conduct in January, but Mitrione's actions tested it. You can check the complete code here, and find out what UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta hopes to accomplish with it.
Still taking temperature -- Uriah Hall: Saturday's TUF finale is filled with fighters who have a great opportunity. At the top of the list is Hall, who has the most hype behind him of any TUF contestant in years. Can he handle it? We'll find out Saturday night.

The UFC wasted no time in promoting the next season of "The Ultimate Fighter." Minutes after Cat Zingano defeated Miesha Tate to win a shot at the UFC women's bantamweight belt and a coaching spot on the next season of TUF, advertisements publicizing their season appeared. First, it was a commercial during Saturday's "The Ultimate Fighter" season 17 finale, then the above on-screen ad.
This season, which will premiere in September, has high stakes attached to it. It will be the first time women are involved in the show as both coaches and fighters. The season will bring together both female and male bantamweights as they train and compete for a spot in the UFC.
Beyond the historic implications, the upcoming season will also be important in the UFC's relationship with Fox. The show, which previously aired on FX, will move to Fox's new all sports channel, Fox Sports 1, and will air on Wednesday nights. Both the UFC and Fox will want TUF to score big.

UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson won a very close decision over Gilbert Melendez at UFC on Fox 7. With the win, he held onto his gold championship belt, but right after the decision was read, another piece of jewelry was on his mind.
With the crowd in San Jose booing, Henderson's girlfriend, Maria Magana, was led into the Octagon. Henderson told UFC commentator Joe Rogan, "I gotta see about a girl real quick." He motioned to one of his cornermen, who pulled a small jewelry box out of his pocket and handed it to Henderson. The champ then dropped to one knee and popped the question.
"I love you. I'm not perfect. I never have been, but you make me happier every single day than any man has a right to be. I love you. Will you marry me?"
[Related: Benson Henderson's controversial win caps off thrilling night]
Magana answered yes, even as the crowd continued to boo. The post-fight proposal had to be approved by several parties including UFC president Dana White and Magana's father.
The happy couple posed for a picture right after the fight.
The night could have very easily been much less joyful for the couple, as Henderson's win was razor-close. Melendez, the Strikeforce champion who was making his UFC debut, started strong. He neutralized Henderson by landing several kicks.
But as the fight wore on into the fourth and fifth rounds, the momentum turned towards Henderson. He finished with impressive flurries late in the third round, and was able to land enough kicks on Melendez that a welt appeared on his leg. Melendez slowed down, but neither fighter was able to consistently apply offense.
That didn't matter to Henderson after the bout.
"There's a lot of bigger things than fighting, and I had to take care of one of those things tonight," Henderson told Rogan after the successful fight and proposal.

The former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion made his debut on Saturday and pulled out a decision over Ilir Latifi, a late replacement after Alexander Gustafsson was not cleared for the fight because of a cut. Mousasi pulled out the unanimous decision win, but shared afterwards that he was dealing with a knee injury.

In other action, Ross Pearson notched a second-round TKO over Ryan Couture. Matt Mitrione stopped his losing streak with a 19-second KO of Philip de Fries. Brad Pickett won a split decision over Mike Easton in a bout that won Fight of the Night honors. Diego Brandao submitted Pablo Garza in the third round with an arm-triangle choke.
