Mike Dolce: 'Daniel Cormier could fight at 185 pounds'
Former UFC fighter and current nutrition consultant to the stars Mike Dolce has worked with many fighters to drop weight, including Daniel Cormier. Cormier, of course, became the number one UFC heavyweight contender but decided instead to drop down to the light heavyweight division and avoid fighting his friend and teammate, champion Cain Velasquez.
To help him get down in weight, Cormier brought in Dolce, and the former Olympian has looked great in winning his first two bouts at light heavyweight. In a recent interview, Dolce said that Cormier's new and healthier lifestyle would allow him to safely and effectively go even lower in weight, should the fighter choose.
?If think if he keeps living the lifestyle that he keeps now, takes more of my advice, a closer approach with me to help him modify that, if he wants to, he?ll be able to weigh in at 185 to compete very close to what he competes at as a light heavyweight,? he said in a recent interview.
?He would gain strength, he would gain speed, and he would gain durability. Look at the photos of him when he weighed in at 205. Look at that body, and you can see he?s not nearly as ripped as he could be. Where you don?t see the definition, all that is additional weight that?s non-functional. So we can get rid of that, get him very close, and that?s even before the dehydration sets in.?
Dolce later took to the UG forum to clarify that Cormier is capable at winning titles at heavyweight and light heavyweight if he wanted, but that he could also do it at 185, over time, if he wanted to. Would you want to see Cormier fight at middleweight?

Conor McGregor: 'I will be champion by end of year'
Conor McGregor has become one of the UFC's biggest international stars, in short order. On Saturday, just two fights into his UFC career, McGregor will headline a card in his home town of Dublin.
Despite his rapid rise, the 26 year-old featherweight doesn't feel as if the trip is surreal or unexpected. "It doesn?t seem surreal. I believed it in when others would not," he recently told MMA Fighting.
"I had that clear, clear vision..I seem to have the habit of predicting the future. I have these visions and they seem to come true. I?m never going to doubt them and no one else should, either."
McGregor's audacious visions of grandeur include becoming a world champion as well. In fact, the brash Irishman doesn't just believe that he'll one day become a champ - he's sure that he'll be the 145 pound title-holder by the end of this year.
"I have a clear, clear vision that that gold belt is around my waist by the end of the year," he said.
"By the end of 2014. And, I don?t know why but it?s clear as day that that belt is wrapped around my waist.
"I?m coming for all of it. I?m coming for the gold. I?m taking over the game. You just sit back and relax and watch me take over the game."
First up, McGregor will face Diego Brandao on Saturday night in Dublin. Do you think McGregor has world championship potential?

UFC Fight Night 46 makes its mark as one of greatest events in UFC history
By almost any measure, the UFC's card in Ireland on Saturday was a smashing success: The fights, top to bottom, were largely excellent. The atmosphere in the arena was incredible. There was drama, as a star seemed to be born.
Anyone who had something bad to say about the show at the O2 Arena in Dublin was simply looking for something to complain about.
When considering atmosphere and quality of card, it was right at the top.
Here is my list of the 10 greatest UFC shows considering crowd, quality and significance of fights, and atmosphere in the arena:
10. UFC 66, Dec. 30, 2006, MGM Grand Garden, Las Vegas -- The main event of this show featured the rematch between light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell against former champion Tito Ortiz. The build-up to the fight was intense and the atmosphere inside was charged. When Liddell walked to the cage, it was almost as though the walls shook. On the undercard, Keith Jardine scored a massive upset by knocking out the beloved fan favorite Forrest Griffin.
9. UFC 60, May 27, 2006, Staples Center, Los Angeles -- Matt Hughes, the reigning welterweight champion, faced the legendary Royce Gracie in the main event in a catchweight bout. It was a battle of then versus now and showed the progress the sport had made in a short period of time, as Hughes easily handled Gracie. The crowd was passionate and gave both main event fighters a great reception.
8. UFC 51, Feb. 5, 2005, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas -- There were three of the company's five titles at the time on this card, with Ortiz defending his belt against Vitor Belfort in the main event. Andrei Arlovski submitted Tim Sylvia to win the heavyweight title and Evan Tanner knocked out Dave Terrell to claim the middleweight title. With so many of the company's biggest stars on the bill, the arena was jammed and the fans were highly enthusiastic.
7. UFC 40, Nov. 22, 2002, MGM Grand Garden, Las Vegas -- This show was the first major success of the Zuffa Era, which began in 2001. The main event featured a light heavyweight title fight between Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, the long-time UFC and Pride fighter who was coming off of a stint in the WWE. The co-main event featured a No. 1 contender's match between Liddell and Babalu and the third bout was a welterweight title match between Hughes and Gil Castillo. It brought in a mix of MMA and pro wrestling fans, who were there to see Shamrock, and it was an electrifying scene.
6. UFC 75, Sept. 8, 2007, O2 Arena, London -- A large, energetic crowd in excess of 16,000 turned to watch a UFC-Pride title unification bout between UFC champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Pride champion Dan Henderson. Michael Bisping scored a heated decision over Matt "The Hammer" Hamill in the co-main and Marcus Davis submitted Paul Taylor in an outstanding match. The fights were good and the crowd loved the show.
5. UFC 157, Feb. 23, 2013, Honda Center, Anaheim, Calif. -- On this night, the Honda Center turned into the Ronda Center, as a large, boisterous crowd of 13,257 turned out to see women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey defend her belt against Liz Carmouche. It was the first women's fight in UFC history and the buildup was intense. Rousey received an incredible ovation as she stepped into the cage.
4. UFC 83, April 19, 2008, Bell Centre, Montreal -- A crowd of 21,390 showed up to see hometown hero Georges St-Pierre get revenge and reclaim the welterweight title from Matt Serra. The card turned St-Pierre into the company's biggest star at that stage and he was received like it was his hometown.
3. UFC 129, April 30, 2011, Rogers Centre, Toronto -- The UFC's first stadium show was a massive, runaway success. A crowd of 55,724 turned out to see St-Pierre defend his belt against Jake Shields. The card also included a featherweight title match between Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick, which had a dramatic finish as Hominick rallied in the third to nearly defeat Aldo. The show also marked Randy Couture's final appearance in the cage, as he was knocked out by Lyoto Machida.
2. UFC 100, July 11, 2009, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas -- The show was a celebration of the sport and included two title fights. Brock Lesnar retained the heavyweight title in the main event with a dominant win over Frank Mir. St-Pierre topped Thiago Alves in the co-main and Henderson knocked out Bisping with one of the most devastating shots ever in a bout on the main card. The fans seemed to sense the significance of the event and were fully engaged throughout.
1. UFC Fight Night 46, July 19, 2014, O2 Arena, Dublin, Ireland -- All 9,500 tickets sold out within three minutes, a tribute to the popularity of McGregor, a hometown boy who routed Diego Brandao in the main event. No arena was ever louder or more passionate. UFC president Dana White said the decibel level hit 103 at one point, while a rock concert is about 110. But it was a constant din as the fans rarely quieted down.

Urijah Faber: 'I'd only fight TJ Dillashaw if he asked me to'
Urijah Faber had one of the very best years of his career, in 2013, but began his 2014 with a loss when he lost a short-notice title rematch against Renan Barao in February. That's why it felt so good to get back on the winning track last Saturday at UFC 175 with a third round rear naked choke submission over Alex Caceres.
"I needed to get back in there," Faber tells Cagewriter.
"I took [the rematch with Barao] on short notice, went in there with an injury and then there was the early stoppage. I needed to get back in the win column and get back to doing what I do best, which is dominating and getting onto bigger and better things. It feels great winning again."
Faber feels right mentally but his body still has some healing to do before he'll be ready to step back into the cage. "Unfortunately, I hurt my rib," he reveals.
"I don?t know if it is torn cartilage or broken. They took x-rays and it didn?t look broken to me but the doctors are actually looking at it today and then they will give me a heads up. So, I don?t know yet as far recovery time, all I know is that my rib hurts. I tend to want to get in there pretty quick, barring injury. Unfortunately, I?m injured right now."
Whenever Faber is cleared to resume training after his rib has healed, he is clear that he wants to be on to "bigger and better things." What is less than clear is if bigger and better means the UFC bantamweight title.
Faber was once the featherweight world title but since dropping down to bantamweight, he has not been able to wrest away a second championship, despite several cracks at the belt. Now, a man he recruited to his Team Alpha Male, TJ Dillashaw reigns atop the 135 pound division after beating Barao last month.
TJ Dillashaw and Faber both have skirted the issue of their potentially fighting one another in the future, but neither have spoken definitively about whether or not they would consider fighting each other. We ask Faber straight out if he would rule out the possibility of fighting his friend and teammate and he did not.
"You know, the only way that fight would happen is if TJ Dillashaw asked me to do it," Faber says.
"The only reason it would happens is if it were something that Dana, Lorenzo, everybody thinks is a must-see and they want to make it worth our while. I don?t necessarily feel like it?s something I want to do. I guess you never rule anything out but it?s not something that I want to do."
If "The California Kid" and Dillashaw were to ever fight, Faber insists it won't be because of his own ambition to be number one, again. "Everybody that really knows me knows that for me, the goal isn?t necessarily having a title again," Faber explains.
"I would love to be considered the best in the world. That?s why I do this and why I love to do it but the world title doesn?t necessarily mean that you?re the best ? it is just symbolic of it."

Renan Barao: 'I have no memory of fight after TJ Dillashaw dropped me'
Renan Barao was taken out of the fight quick in his UFC bantamweight title defense bout last May against TJ Dillashaw when the Team Alpha Male fighter connected with a hard punch and dropped the champ. Dillashaw would go on to dominate and then finish the fight to become the new 135 pound king.
If Barao looked out of it after the first round, it was because he was. During a recent media scrum, the Brazilian reveals that he has no memory of any of the fight until the punch that dropped him.
"I remember everything that happened until that point," he said.
"After [that punch], I only woke up in the locker room. The fight was really close in the beginning, but everything changed after that punch.
Now, not only will the two fight again in an immediate rematch for no compelling reason, they will do so next month. Barao and his team complained that he didn't have enough time to prepare for Dillashaw before their first bout and then conversely decided to skip adequate rest, recovery and training time to prepare for him a second time, so quickly in their rematch.
"He landed a heavy punch in the beginning of the fight and I kept fighting on autopilot," Barao continued. "I was too slow, I wasn?t thinking. [Coach Andre Pederneiras] told me to do one thing and I did another. But I will fight smart this time, I won?t let this happen again."
Dillashaw's coach Duane Ludwig told Cagewriter recently that he believes the fight is happening too soon in every way, and wondered why Barao would not allow himself enough time to heal up after the memory-wiping concussion he received against Dillashaw not long ago. By accepting a fight in late August, Barao has had to basically jump right back into a training camp and not let his mind and body heal before taking more damage in sparring.
"You always have to bring something new," Barao went on. "I accepted the fight on short notice and I wasn?t 100 percent ready for it, but this time will be different. I never trained so hard in my entire life, so it?s going to be different."
So, Barao feels that he didn't train enough for the first fight and his solution is to not rest and heal enough for the second. There's no telling what will happen in the rematch between these two great champions on Aug. 30, but we can be almost certain that, considering Barao's admission of brain damage in the first bout, the former champ is jumping in to it pride-first, and not with his long-term health in mind.
Do you think Barao is fighting again too soon after his tough loss to Dillashaw? Let us know in the comments section.

Cat Zingano returns to action against Amanda Nunes at UFC 178
Cat Zingano, who lost a UFC title shot and an opportunity to coach against women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey when she suffered a knee injury during training, willl return to competition on Sept. 27 in Las Vegas when she meets Amanda Nunes at UFC 178 at the MGM Grand Garden.
Zingano defeated former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate to earn a shot to coach against Rousey and then fight her in the finale, but a knee injury announced on May 28, 2013, forced her to withdraw. She was replaced by Tate, a move that shocked Rousey. Rousey then defeated Tate in the third round when they met at UFC 168.
Injury, though, hasn't been Zingano's only issue. In January, her husband, Mauricio Zingano, took his own life.
Cat Zingano returned to competition at the UFC Fan Expo last week when she won a match at Grappler's Quest with a flying armbar.
The Brazilian Nunes is 2-0 in the UFC, with victories over Sheila Gaff and Germaine de Randamie.
Zingano (8-0) is ranked No. 1 and Nunes (9-3) is No. 8 in the current UFC women's bantamweight rankings.

UFC 176 is off; Jose Aldo-Chad Mendes title fight to be rescheduled
For the second time in the current ownership's history, the UFC has decided to cancel a pay-per-view event. On Tuesday, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said UFC 176, scheduled for Aug. 2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, has been canceled because of an injury to featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
UFC 151 was canceled in 2012 when Dan Henderson suffered an injury and was unable to fight light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. When no suitable replacement for Henderson could be found, the event was canceled.
Aldo suffered a neck injury during training on July 1 which Fertitta described Tuesday as "kind of like a stinger," that forced him to withdraw from the fight. UFC president Dana White said on Saturday he thought Aldo would be ready to return in 45 days, and Fertitta said because it was a short-term thing, the decision was made to cancel the Aug. 2 show.
The bout is not rescheduled as yet, however, because it is still not clear when Aldo will be ready, but mid-October seems like a good guess at this point, Fertitta said.
Other fighters who were scheduled to fight on the Los Angeles card will be rescheduled and added to other upcoming shows. The Aldo-Mendes bout, which is a rematch of UFC 142, will officially be added to the schedule when Aldo is healthy. Aldo defeated Mendes at UFC 142 on Jan. 14, 2012.
There will be no UFC 176, as a result. A rematch between champion T.J. Dillashaw and Renan Barao set for Aug. 30 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., will continue to be known as UFC 177, Fertitta told Yahoo Sports.
"At the end of the day, this doesn't happen very often, but in pay-per-views, we want to maintain where we have a title on the line," Fertitta said. "Unless it's a special event, like an Anderson Silva or something like that, we want [to have a title fight headline] a pay-per-view, so we've decided to go ahead and postpone the event."
Another piece of news came out of the postponement. Fertitta said UFC officials had talked amongst each other about potentially putting Ronda Rousey in a title fight in place of Aldo-Mendes, though he said it never progressed as far as talking to Rousey or her team about it. Fertitta revealed that Rousey also broke her right hand in her successful title defense Saturday at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas against Alexis Davis.
There was a bit of controversy after the fight when UFC announcer Joe Rogan asked Rousey in the cage if she'd be willing to fight Aug. 2. Rogan was prompted to ask that by someone in the satellite truck who was speaking in his ear. UFC president Dana White was angry at the producer for telling Rogan to ask the question and thus putting Rousey on the spot.
Rousey received nine stitches in her right hand when a cyst on a knuckle ruptured. She also said at the postfight news confernece that she needs minor surgery on her right knee.
Now, with the broken hand, it's clear she'll be out for a while. With no other championship fights able to be made on such short notice, UFC officials opted to scrap the event entirely.
"I think [Aldo-Mendes] will be in October, but we're not going to know probably for about two weeks what the status of Jose is," Fertitta said. "Basically, doctors told him no contact and no training for three weeks, and we're one week into that. We'll regroup in a couple of weeks and we'll have some news at that point."

Alexander Gustafsson faces five to six week recovery post-surgery
Yesterday it was announced that number one UFC light heavyweight title contender Alexander Gustafsson was forced to pull out of his Sep. 27 championship rematch with Jon Jones because of a knee injury. Today, Gustafsson told Thomas Gerbasi of UFC.com that he tore a meniscus joint in his knee, will undergo surgery to repair it and then hopes to heal within five to six weeks after that.
?I?m disappointed I can?t fight, but this is not the end, it?s just the beginning,? he said. ?I?m going to come back much stronger.
Gustafsson added that the injury is "not a big deal at all," before also giving his prediction for who will win between Jones and his replacement, Daniel Cormier.?Both are great athletes and it?s going to be a tough fight for sure," the Swede said.
"But Jones has his height and reach advantage over DC, so I think that will be the key thing in this fight. I think Jones by decision.?
Who are you picking between Jones and Cormier? And, who would you rather see Gustafsson fight when he returns?

Dana White: 'UFC will sign Gina Carano next week'
Former Strikeforce starGina Carano hasn't fought in over five years but UFC president Dana White promises that his promotion will sign her to a contract in the coming week. Evidently high off of signing top bantamweight prospect Holly Holm to the UFC this week, White is confident that he will ink the crossover star within days.
"One down, one to go," White recently told ESPN.
"I'm going to meet with Gina next week and get that [expletive] thing done. Next week, man."
The UFC has reportedly negotiated with Carano and her team for months and, according to White, the details and her signing are now simply a formality."It's just a matter of me and [UFC co-owner] Lorenzo [Fertitta] going to jump on a plane to Los Angeles, get in a room with her and her lawyer and get this thing done."
Carano has not fought since losing via TKO to Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino in August of 2009 and has gone on to a busy film career. "Conviction" also had trouble making 145 and 150 pound weight limits for fights in the past so it is still unclear if she would or could make the UFC bantamweight limit of 135 pounds or if the promotion would allow her to fight at a higher, currently non-existent weight for them.
Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has said in the past that she would make an exception and fight at a higher weight in order to take on Carano. According to White, Carano wants the fight with Rousey badly.
"There is no doubt about it, she wants to fight," he said.
"And she wants to fight Ronda."
