Nearly every season since the UFC created the reality series 'The Ultimate Fighter,' UFC president Dana White raves about the bouts and promises it will be the "best season ever." That's the promoter in him.
But as the 15th season is about to begin, White's focus is slightly different. The series, now known as 'The Ultimate Fighter Fridays,' seems to be as much about the battle between White and coach Roy Nelson as it is about the fighters or Nelson's upcoming fight with opposing coach Shane Carwin.
The series will return to the taped format on Sept. 14 with a two-hour special that will include all 16 fights to get into the house. The season features welterweight fighters, including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Cameron Diffley, who served as the jiu jitsu instructor when Forrest Griffin was the coach.
There have been plenty of times a fighter has fought on the show and then coached, but this might be the first time a man coached and then showed up as the contestant.
But the big news seems to be about the battles between White and the outspoken Nelson, the winner of Season 10.
"Carwin and Nelson are two guys who just can't stand each other and Roy and I haven't exactly seen eye to eye either," White said in a statement. "He's been a nightmare for me to work with on this show with all of his stupid b.s."
Nelson kicked things off in an interview with MMA Junkie in which he publicly blasted White. That is big news in and of itself, since so few of the UFC fighters are willing to take White on publicly.
Nelson, though, had no such qualms. He tore into White in an interview with MMA Junkie's Steven Marrocco.
It's probably because he wants to be a fighter, and he's not
Nelson continued to poke at White, painting himself as a guy looking to carry the sport to the next level.

White responded to Nelson following the UFC on Fox 4 card in Los Angeles, telling MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani that Nelson "is a huge pain in the [expletive]."
The dynamic between White and Nelson may wind up being the highlight of the season.

Round 5 released its latest round of UFC dolls/action figures/toys meant for kids but likely bought by grown men. It includes a Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Dominick Cruz, and two different Alistair Overeems that don't remotely resemble each other.
The Overeem on the left in blue gloves is supposed to represent the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion's PRIDE days. The one on the right is supposed to be him in his one fight in the UFC before he was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for elevated testosterone.
Overeem fought for PRIDE from 2002-2007, and moved between light heavyweight and middleweight with a few heavyweight bouts sprinkled in. He was leaner then, but also less successful, losing at light heavyweight to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Since moving to heavyweight permanently in 2007, he has one loss and one no contest. Putting on weight has clearly worked for him, but the dolls are one more reminder of how much muscle he has put on since fighting.
The horse meat he credits with his weight gain sure does a (doll) body good.

Before UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen, the two engaged in a war of words. Sonnen called Jones out, Jones responded with, "If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be," and then Jones said he knew what he was doing all along.
Except, there are reports now that Jones was bothered by Sonnen not only calling out Jones here, but in the many things Sonnen said after Jones turned down their fights. He even reportedly asked UFC president Dana White to tell Sonnen to stop.
This isn't the first time Jones has been oddly bothered by what people have to say about him. After beating Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, the UFC brought Rashad Evans into the cage for the two to face off for their next fight. Jones was so bothered by the sight of his former friend in the cage that he ignored Evans' compliments on how he fought, and said Evans "ruined his night twice." Really? Jones had just beaten a former champion by submission, but the mere sight of Evans ruined what should have been a jubilant evening for him.
When Jones apologized for getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk, he lashed out again at his "haters" who tried to "kick him while he was down." After White announced the cancellation of UFC 151 and lashed out against Jones and his camp, Jones actually unfollowed his boss on Twitter.
For a millionaire professional athlete, Jones has a thin skin. He often appears more concerned with what his detractors think than his supporters.
It's an odd stance for someone of his level to take, because part of the job of being a famous athlete is dealing with people who don't like you. Look at the mentions of Twitter pages or Facebook pages for any pro athlete. They are being blamed for everything from fantasy team losses to ruining a fan's life. San Francisco 49er Kyle Williams received death threats after fumbling in a playoff game. It's not right that anyone should have to deal with such vitriol, but it's part of the fame game.
Jones has the skills, speed, reach, height and fight intelligence to stay at the top of the MMA world for a long, long time. He appears so far above his competition that the only person who can beat him is Jon Jones. Right now, he should be thinking about his fight with Vitor Belfort on Sept. 22, not be worried about what Sonnen has to say.

Showboating can give a fight a little bit of personality, but there are times it goes wrong. At the Tuff 'n' Uff amateur MMA card on Sunday, Shai Lindsey raised his arms at Carlo Juinio in the Nick Diaz-ian, "Come at me, bro," gesture. Unfortunately for Lindsey, Juinio did as he requested.
By the end of the video, Lindsey is sitting up and on a stool. The only lasting wound is on his pride.
A note to all fighters and future fighters out there: Only showboat if you're ready to accept the kick to the face it may inspire.

Mixed Martial Arts certainly doesn?t have any shortage of accomplished amateur wrestlers or even Olympic-level competitors. However, none have the blend of both athletic prowess and showmanship as Kurt Angle.
A former WWE champion who has called TNA his home for the past five years, Angle also won gold at the 1996 Olympic games in freestyle wrestling and is viewed as one of the greatest mat-technicians in the sport?s history. Though Angle is north of 40 now, when asked about MMA the talented grappler said he would have ended up as a fighter in unscripted bouts had the climate been different a decade ago.
“I would have done MMA if I would have known it would have blown up the way it did,? revealed Angle in an interview with MMA Uncensored (as transcribed by MMAMania). ?In 1999, I joined WWE, then I went to TNA. If MMA had blown up at that time, I would have done it, full time. I would have gone into MMA.?
?But, I was so far into it, main eventing Wrestlemanias, that there was no way I could turn back. I do love pro wrestling, and I love being with TNA?but it just wasn’t the right time. The money was in pro wrestling,? Angle continued, saying he even spoke with UFC President Dana White on two occasions though neither could agree on the particulars of a deal.
Former WWE Champion Dave Batista Making MMA Debut in October
Though it?s unlikely Angle will ever have an opportunity to show off his legitimate skills inside a ring, he still isn?t ready to completely write the idea off.
“I can’t say yes or no. I’m 43. I tried out for the Olympics, last year, and I kept getting injured. It’s one of those things where, I was wrestling great, I think I could have made it, but I just kept getting injured,? explained Angle. ?My body’s breaking down. The answer is probably no, but if the offer is good enough, you never know.?

When UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson selected Neil Magny from Shane Carwin?s squad last night on the Ultimate Fighter 16 he explained it was the result of the 24-year old celebrating his birthday that very day. However, the gift was not meant to be one out of kindness but rather a means of eliminating Magny from the season?s tournament by pairing him against BJJ expert Cameron Diffley.
In the end, Magny has a present of his own to deliver in the form of an opening round victory for his team. The Chicago native?s success came as the result of crisp striking and takedown defense preventing Diffley from ever finding his groove minus one legitimate submission attempt.
Their bout capped off the second episode of TUF 16 also ripe with other highlights including some dissention in the ranks of Team Nelson and the beginnings of a prank war.
A Closer Look at the TUF 16 Teams
A handful of fighters in Nelson?s group showed disappointment with their leader?s decision to approach training less rigorously than they would have preferred, leaving some competitors wondering if they were truly going to be able to maximize their potential.
On a brighter note, his team also gelled some during the episode after covering Team Carwin?s Mike Ricci with flour after catching him off-guard as he returned from training. Ricci, who had previously said he couldn?t relate to the intellectual deficiency of some of his house-mates, seemed unamused by remained stone-faced rather than lashed out at the culprits.

TweetNow that the UFC has crowned its first flyweight champion in the form of Demetrious Johnson, the organization will have to start looking for contenders to challenge for the company?s newest belt. While it looks like an October 5 bout between John Dodson and Jussier da Silva will determine the first individual in that line, talented 125er Ian McCall recently made it clear he isn?t to be forgotten about either.
McCall went online last night to issue a warning to Johnson to let him know he?s out to settle a score. The pair has mixed it up on two previous occasions with one resulting in an errant Draw and the other a decision win for ?Mighty Mouse?.
?I’m coming for ya,? posted McCall on The Underground. ?Hold onto my belt for me in the meantime.?
McCall: “Free at last, free at last…”
The 11-3-1 McCall has not fought since his June loss to Johnson and does not have anything inked at the moment, seeing an expected match-up fall apart due to injury and an untimely arrest for some old warrants. However, he is expected to fight again before year?s end.

One of the underlying storylines on this season of the Ultimate Fighter is the dynamic between coaches Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson. The two talented heavyweights are among the most powerful punchers in MMA and will face off after the show?s conclusion, yet it seems the personal animosity between the two has overshadowed any sort of professional rivalry.
Carwin offered up his thoughts on ?Big Country? in a recent interview where he explained his dislike of Nelson stems from the way his rival represents himself.
“I think he puts on a front. He claims to be this average guy and that’s who his audience is – that he’s this average dude fighting ? and he’s anything but that,? explained Carwin in a conversation with MMAFightCorner. ?The guy’s never had a job in his life. And that’s how I grew up. I grew up poor and I had a job at 15. I was working construction, throwing boxes, working in factories. For me to get where I got, it was a hard route of labor and that guy’s never even had a job. For him to sit there and talk to blue collar people, and me and my people, that stuff’s bullsh*t and it pisses me off.”
Carwin: “I hate Roy Nelson as a person.”
While Carwin?s feelings towards Nelson were negative in general, it doesn?t sound emotions ever boiled over on set based on the way the opposing teams? schedules were set up in addition to Carwin?s focus on the contestants rather than the coaches.
?Working with somebody that you dislike is kind of rough. You got those people at the office, you’re both trying to get coffee and you don’t like each other. There’s not a lot to be said,? stated Carwin. ?Obviously it was those eight individuals, those kids?that’s what we’re there for is to make them better?and not only a better fighter, but a better person and becoming successful in life and giving them the tools and the foundation on how to do that.?
Fans can catch Carwin/Nelson (as well as the rest of the TUF 16 cast) every Friday night on FX at 10:00 PM EST.

For the second time in a week, the challenger in a UFC title fight had to pull out of a bout with an injury.
This time around, though, it was a far simpler process with much less drama in finding a replacement.
As first reported late Thursday by MMA Junkie.com, Erik Koch is injured and out of his featherweight title fight with Jose Aldo that is scheduled for Oct. 13 at HSBC in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will step up to face him.
UFC president Dana White confirmed the switch in a text with Yahoo! Sports. White said Koch had injured a knee in training. He was disappointed to lose Koch, but praised Edgar in comments made earlier Thursday to MMA Junkie's John Morgan.
Obviously, we've had a rough couple of weeks here at the UFC, and then sure enough, I walk in to work today, and Erik Koch is hurt. But Frankie Edgar, being the stud and the warrior that he is, steps up and accepts this fight.
Last week, a major controversy arose when Dan Henderson pulled out of a light heavyweight title fight against champion Jon Jones scheduled for Sept. 1 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. White arranged to Chael Sonnen to replace Henderson, but Jones declined. He said he didn't want to fight a different opponent with such little practice time.
As a result, the event was canceled and Jones will now defend the belt against Vitor Belfort on Sept. 22 in Toronto at UFC 152.
No such issues existed this time around, though. Edgar lost his lightweight title to Benson Henderson at UFC 144 in Japan in February, then dropped a hotly disputed decision in the rematch on Aug. 11 at UFC 150 in Denver.
For years, White and fans had lobbied for Edgar to drop to the 145-pound class. Edgar barely needed to cut weight to make lightweight's 155-pound limit. But Edgar had always resisted, given he was winning.
But after losing back-to-back bouts and knowing that another shot at the lightweight title would be a long way off, he jumped at the chance to face Aldo.
The Aldo-Edgar match now pits the Nos. 3 and 7 pound-for-pound fighters in the world, according to the Yahoo! Sports rankings.

With the news of Showtime's cancellation of "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy," much of this coming weekend's MMA action has gone largely unnoticed. While the UFC is putting on a quality card this weekend, one can not ignore the fact that they are doing so overseas. This and other factors have lead to a collective "meh" from the majority of the MMA viewership. Despite these unfortunate circumstances, there are still an abundance of quality match-ups set to take place over this weekend. Here are the bouts some members of the MMAFrenzy staff are most looking forward to.

UFC legend Vitor Belfort might be an 8:1 underdog in this weekend?s title-fight with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones but don?t tell him that. As far as Belfort?s concerned, he is confident he will leave countless jaws dropped with an impressive victory over the incredibly successful youngster.
?I know I can win this fight and shock the world,? acknowledged Belfort in a conversation with the UFC. ?I am so ready in my mind, it is hard for me to explain. I am so ready to be the champion again. My brain, my body, they are so ready.?
?That?s how I live my life, with belief. I am a winner. I am ready to win,? Belfort continued, explaining his mindset entering the UFC 152 bout is the same he employs in his day-to-day journey through life. ?As you get older you learn about yourself. I have the same abilities as I had when I was younger, but now I have more sense of myself. I know how I respond and learn. Whenever someone says something like ?Can you speak French?? I don?t say ?no? I say ?Not yet?. Against Jon Jones people ask ?how can you beat this guy?? and I say ?I will show you how on Saturday?.?
“The Phenom” Says He is “Always Ready to Fight”
Belfort has finished both opponents he?s faced since falling to Anderson Silva in February 2011. He has racked up 21 total wins in his career including fourteen strike-based stoppages like those against Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin, evidence showing he certainly has the ability to back up his words.

Matt Hamill's return to the Octagon was less than thrilling. Hamill may have won his first post-retirement bout with a decision over Roger Hollett, but he didn't win many fans with the slow, plodding bout. The crowd at UFC 152 in Toronto booed the bout, and the fight was panned on social media.
One of the notable tweets about how boring the fight was came from UFC fight Vladimir Matyushenko:
Damn! Even injured I could beat @hammerufc and @rogerhollett together! What a weak fight!
? Vladimir Matyushenko (@vladthejanitor) September 23, 2012
At one point, it was supposed to be Matyushenko in the cage with Hamill. The fight that was originally made for UFC 152 was Hamill vs. Hollett. However, Hollett was still under contract with Bellator. Matyushenko stepped in to fight Hamill, but then tore his Achilles' tendon in training. Hollett had his contract situation cleared up, and was brought back into fight Hamill.
But even with his torn tendon, Matyushenko thought he could still bring a better fight than the one he saw on Saturday night.

Fighters on the doomed "Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy" will receive some compensation despite the event's cancellation after Showtime refused to air the card in the wake of lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez being injured. While terms have not been made public, sources have confirmed that the fighters will receive at least some of their expected earnings from Zuffa, who was not required to pay them anything.
