UFC heavyweight Roy Nelson may not look like a fighter thanks to his scraggly appearance and bulging gut, but there?s no doubt ?Big Country? is one of the top Mixed Martial Artists in the division. Despite being labeled as the definition of an underachiever by UFC President Dana White, Nelson has impressed fans time and time again with his combination of high-level grappling and knockout power.
Likewise, during last night?s episode of TUF 16 his team appeared to be in trouble when Joey Rivera was picked to face Shane Carwin?s #1 pick, Bellator veteran and season-favorite Sam Alvey. However, like his coach, Rivera rose to the occasion and walked away from the bout with a win in tow.
White Gives His Take on Nelson
The victory came as a result of Rivera?s ability to land some solid head kicks in addition to scoring some takedowns and even lock up a submission attempt or two. His success marked the first win for Team Nelson and evened the opposing squads? score at 1-1 each.
Also on the episode, Team Nelson decided to have some fun at Alvey?s expense by putting his mattress in the swimming pool. However, ?Smilin? Sam did little more than laugh it off and sleep on the couch instead. Additionally, Nic Herron-Webb upset his own teammates as well as those coached by Carwin when he decided to play pool, whistle, and skip rope after hours.
